William Norman Vaughan 81 of Lueders died Sunday at 12 40 p m at the family home. Funeral was Monday at 3 p m at Lueders Baptist Church with Rev B L Hidgen and Rev Oran Smith officiating. Burial in Highland cemetery with Kinney Funeral Home in charge. Survivors include his wife four sons a daughter six grandchildren three great grandchildren and a sister. A jackpot roping contest is scheduled for Sunday afternoon April 6 at 2 30 p m. The event will be three miles north of Stamford on the Haskell highway and invites all calf ropers to bring their horses and participate.

Red Cross drive nears new quota across county
Jones County trails by about 660 dollars toward a raised total of seventh tier quota increased after last week’s tornado relief request. Through Wednesday morning 7291.87 had been collected with 7451 planned for the first target and 7951 after the boost. Stamford Anson Hamlin rural areas and many small communities contributed, with Lueders and Leeders schools among donors as lists of towns and sums creep toward the new target.

Funeral held for Cecil Ambrose in Andrews
Funeral service for Cecil Ambrose, age 50, was held Sunday at 3 pm at Kinney and Son Funeral chapel. Ambrose had lived in Stamford with his sister Mrs Ed Bosse before moving to Andrews eight months ago. He died in a hospital at Andrews after a two week illness. He formerly lived in Abilene and had been a Methodist preacher in Stonewall county. Burial was in Highland Cemetery. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs Maudel Nelson and Mrs Ed Bosse. a son Robert Ambrose of Abdiene. and three brothers Guy Ambrose, Carl Ambrose, and another in Farr City, Ark.

Jody Foster won first place in the Pierian Club essay contest on Why I Am Glad I Am an American. Sandra Swenson placed second and Matilda Metz third with seven other students participating. All volunteers from Stamford High School history classes taught by Ernest Heath attended the club meeting where ribbons and cash awards were presented by Mrs. Lucille Smith.

Lueders held a Play Day on April 1 sponsored by the PTA with judges E M Connell Everett Beaver and Mrs Johnny Oman. Parade moved through downtown led by mounted colors fire truck and floats. Jones Granted Stay of Execution by Governor
William K. Jones of Hamlin received a stay of execution from Gov. Allan Shivers just before midnight. He was to be executed for the murder of his 42 year old daughter and his wife on February 27, 1951. The reprieve delays the sentence to April 28 while the State Prison Psychiatrist reports back.
