Springfield officer recalls cruelties of Russian Reds in Siberia

Lieutenant Ebner who served in Vladivostok recalls brutal treatment of civilians by Cossacks and Bolsheviks in 1918 19. He describes torture shooting river ice holes and dire sanitation as American forces aided refugees and guarded government stores.

Wittenberg College Commencement Set June 1 4

Wittenberg college announces its sixty ninth annual commencement from June 1 to June 4. Forty seven graduates will receive diplomas on Wednesday morning June 4 with Senator Warren G. Harding delivering the commencement address. The week opens June 1 at First Lutheran church with Rev Dr J Wesley Kapp delivering the baccalaureate sermon. The program features music by Mrs David Whittington and a church quartet.

Three Autos Stolen From Springfield Streets

Three automobiles were stolen from Springfield Saturday night. L T Green reported a Buick touring car taken from in front of the Elks club at 11 130 p m. J J W Aleshire said his Ford was taken from Fountain avenue between Columbia and North streets valued at 450 dollars and Ohio license 243987. Co M Gaver reported his 1914 Ford truck stolen from in front of Nisleys coal office on South Fountain avenue valued at 375 dollars.

Calvary Lutheran Sunday School Elects Officers

Miss Dorothy Gregory was elected president of the Calvary Lutheran Sunday school class of Mrs. Helen Cox Woodard at a meeting held Saturday afternoon at Miss Marcia Boesenberg’s home on South Western avenue. Other officers elected include Miss Marcia Boesenberg as vice president and Miss Isabel e Packer as secretary and treasurer.

Urbana Man J H Denney to Speak at Decoration Day Services

J H Denney of Urbana will deliver the address at Decoration Day services in the Knights of Pythias Hall at South Vienna on May 30 at two o clock in the afternoon. Lieutenant William McGning will be officer in charge.

Bank clearings jump over quarter million in Springfield

A weekly report from the Springfield Clearing House Association shows a gain of 256 088 40 dollars in bank clearings over the previous period. Total clearings reached 1 167 026 47 with balances of 430 823 83. The 1918 figures were 930 963 07 in clearings and 341 883 in balances.

Band to be enlisted for Cincinnati district duty

Officers at the Cincinnati recruiting office will enlist a 22 member band drawn from Cincinnati Columbus Dayton Lima Springfield and Findlay for duty in the district The band will be attached to the Cincinnati recruiting office and used for parades concerts and patriotic gatherings as ordered by Commander J A Bell Read by Boatswain's Mate Leonard J Pet on Saturday at the focal naval recruiting station.

Prizes Awarded to High School Boys in Drill Contest

Winfred Cox private in Springfield High School military training won the five dollar prize for best drilled private. Harold Aten led the department and earned the second prize for best drilled leader. The drill occurred Friday afternoon under C P Shiveley’s direction. About 475 students enrolled in the training. a 60 boy squad continued after the course became optional by board order.

Promotion Comes for Springfield Doctor Major Link

Friends of Captain J A Link of Springfield learn he is promoted to major effective May 1 in France where stationed at a base hospital. He has served longer in the medical department than any other Springfield man except Major H W Weihrauch who enlisted in Cleveland. Major Link joined in August 1918 as a captain and has aided both army and civilian patients. he is expected home early in July.

Night of Dissipation as Police Patroled Saloons

A large crowd flooded Springfield saloons Saturday night as police fought to keep order after eleven o clock. Bartenders closed early while patrons pressed the bars, and many drinkers left with the last bottle as the city faced a crisis in revelry.
