Mrs. John Lester died after her clothing ignited while she replenished a fire in her stove. Grandsons helped pour water, but flames consumed most of her clothing. She died at 2 a.m. Thursday and was laid to rest in Mount Freedom cemetery Friday. She leaves a husband two sons and three daughters.
Roscoe Baker a Mackville fifteen year old was given two years in the State Reform School before Judge Lisey on Monday. An affidavit by his father charged him with being unruly. The sentence was held in abeyance if he keeps his promise to behave. The Reform School’s crowding may delay admission.
The first examination for white teachers will be held Friday and Saturday May 19 and 20. The motion for colored teachers will be held one week later. Examinations continue on the third Friday and Saturday in June July and August. No exams will be held at any other times.

The Nelson Circuit Court records fifty suits against the Standard Oil Company seeking damages of $1,000 each for selling oil without a license to merchants in Nelson County for about six months before November 14, when licenses were obtained.
Mrs. Mary E. Perkins of Battle spent several days last week visiting. Miss Emma Graham of Sharpsville visited H. J. Brown last week. H. J. Brown bought a mare from John Reynolds for 60 dollars. Royalty is dangerously sick with death expected at any hour. Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Perkins visited Harrodsburg Saturday.

G Holliday seven hogs averaging 140 pounds at 41 cents. ten sheep to Sir. E. G Holliday to R. A William veal calf 200 pounds at 8.50. W. L Graham to R. A William veal calf. E T Perkins to W. L Graham two hogs for 12. T. J Atkinson to E. T Perkins fat cow at 3 cents and cow and calf for 30.
The Washington county grand jury returned many indictments against the Standard Oil Company. One indictment from Mation county was tried at Lebanon and a conviction secured. Judge Thurman sustained pleas of former conviction, applicable to all siting indictments for failure to procure a State license. The total impact is seen as modest.
Rev. W. F. Gordon spoke at the Methodist church on Friday night in a lecture titled A Sail on the Sea of Matrimony. The audience gave undivided attention as he blended wholesome advice with humor, tracing matrimony from creation to present times and urging spouses to remain lovers amid reefs and storms to reach lasting happiness.
Mr Watt OBryan fractured his left arm after slipping on a banana peel thrown on the pavement Friday. The fall injured him but is not as severe as first feared and he is now recovering. The incident prompts a call for a law against discarding slippery peels on sidewalks.
Mrs R M Redd of Lexington sister of Ed M Russell of this place died at St Josephs Hospital Lexington last Friday at 1 A M from stomach trouble She was born and raised in Nelson county leaving a husband three daughters and one son Interment was held in Lexington last Saturday morning

The ladies of the Mackville Christian church will host a court day dinner in Uriah Martin's store room opposite Wharton and Tapp's livery stable in Springfield on Monday May 22. Proceeds benefit the new Mackville Ky church. Subscribe for The Sun, $1 a year.
Judge Magoon succeeds Major General George W. Davis as governor of the Panama canal zone and is identified as one of the canal project’s big three. Theodore P. Shonts and John F. Wallace will lead the build and governance, reporting to the secretary of war. Magoon previously served as general counsel of the Panama canal commission.

Matt Hilton and wife visited Miss Adams at the Lee Riley home. Miss Grace Waters of Springfield visited the Adams girls.
Mr Young discovers a large cow-sucker snake in a hand to hand struggle with his wife in the front yard after work. The clash ends fatally for the snake. Mrs Young says the killing was justifiable as the reptile had been stealing calves and eggs.
Explosion at Hill Bros saw mill on Mrs Sue Knott farm near town killed George Matherly instantly. Hill injured but improving. Crown sheet worn, temporarily repaired with copper caused water to flood fire box and explode. Matherly of Willisburb unmarried, funeral held there, many friends offer condolences.
A May Day ceremony at St. Dominic’s on Sunday honored the Holy Virgin Mary. Children led with flowers before the Blessed Virgin, Lucille Noe crowned the image, Father Hennessey spoke to the children on duties, vespers followed, and a large crowd attended in fine weather. Misses Myrtle Price Jennie McCabe and Emily Russell were praised for guiding the children’s performance.
Felix Hamilton a Lebanon grocery drummer and county figure was badly injured Monday when his horse ran away after he and a boy canvassed Nelson county towns. He was thrown from the buggy hitting his head and neck, unconscious and bleeding. He was treated at Oscar Manning’s home and Bardstown doctors initial prognosis serious, later improving with hope of full recovery.
Breeder states 60 mares booked to stallion Floater and closes his books until June 1. After that he will be available to Jennets only. Floater is advertised as a standard bred trotting stallion bred in the purple and described as of top quality, contact Be Shevey at 9315.
The wife of Commonwealth's Attorney Durham died at her Greensburg home last Wednesday night of consumption after a long illness. Friends and relatives were not surprised by the death. Washington county friends extend condolences. Besides the husband the deceased is survived by one child.
John McAuliffe a Springfield native born in 1840 died Monday morning from heart disease at about seven o'clock He came to America in 1860 served as a Union teamster after the Civil War he owned little property at death and left a life estate to his first wife He was married again to Nancy Shea who survives him Funeral services were held at 9 o'clock this morning in the Catholic church McAuliffe was well regarded for his honesty and character

Mr P R Lyddan near Mooresville exhibits a pig with a perfectly shaped body but an extreme freakish head. The head features a formed but elevated top arrangement and two full noses and mouths, drawing considerable public interest.
Local churches in Mackville held Sunday services with ministers Walden Todd Overstreet and W T Gordon preaching at various venues. Nearby visitors included Mrs Barnett and Miss Jappa from Anderson county and Miss Addie Warren from Berryville as guests. Local residents James Creger and John Peterson from Texas attended gatherings, with several families visiting and illness noted for Mrs Will Bottom.
