Death of Washington county pioneer Mr James S Smith
Mr James S Smith longtime Washington county resident died Sunday at six pm after a stomach congestion illness. Born Bardstown Kentucky November 21 1833 he married Theresa Ann Mudd in 1860 and moved to the county. Survived by two daughters Mrs J W Kelly and Mrs Will Hill and three brothers and three sisters. Funeral held at St Rose with interment in St Rose Cemetery.

John K Phelps son of the late Zack Phelps and a noted Louisville business figure was killed instantly in an morning auto crash at 1 30. Injured are G Benjamin Mellithan of 621 East Broadway with bruises and a cut above the eye and Thomas Hart a 42 year old saloon keeper of 502 Baxter avenue who has a broken right leg.

Five Men Die In Street Crash Involving Chauffeur Rose
A late night accident on Baxter avenue near Jefferson street killed one man instantly and left three others unconscious. Joseph Rose, nineteen, a chauffeur for Attilla Cox Jr., drove the car that struck a telegraph pole. Rose escaped injury and fled the scene. The occupants were youths enjoying a ride when the wreck occurred.

Severe storm lashes Springfield and county with damage
A Thursday night storm swept Springfield and Washington County with 50 mph winds. Roads and buildings suffered heavy damage as trees and a large elm fell, roofs and chimneys were blown down, and the Walton Hotel area was noisy during the scare. No fatalities or injuries were reported locally.

Fifty Thousand Tobacco Money Paid to Harrodsburg Dealers
Harrodsburg Herald reports Chairman Kyle received fifty thousand dollars as part payment for the 1907 tobacco crop and deposited it in local banks. Sixty five hogsheads remain in the warehouse with daily orders expected. Some small factories face payment delays, slowing distribution planned for May 10. Banks will advance the remaining balance due on the 1906 crop, about one cent per pound, to be distributed soon.
