A major blaze on Main Street destroyed several frame buildings between Grundy McIntire’s dry goods and W P Lawrence’s grocery. Property losses top thousands with extensive damage to Williams millinery and Mayes undertaker. firemen credited for saving key rear buildings and keeping the blaze from spreading.
Harrodsburg Herald reports Hon. J. T. Royalty will not seek the state legislature. He said long absences from home would be required to campaign and, with a ill wife and numerous business interests, preferred to stay home and tend to matters at hand.
John D. Roberts son of Mr. Simpson Roberts of this place delivered the salutatory address at the Louisville College of Pharmacy commencement in Louisville on April 23. He earned the gold medal for best work after the State Board praised his performance in a difficult exam. Roberts is home and back at Haydon and Robertson's drug store.
Announcement from last week states Woodson Moss will leave Walton Hotel to run a Winchester hotel. H K Nobelette, Moss’s brother-in-law, was to take over Walton but will not come. Rice, current Springfield Hotel proprietor, rents Walton. Thos O Bryan, a popular assessor, will run the Springfield Hotel.
The nine year old daughter of Mr and Mrs J W Perkins of Willisburg died last Tuesday April 23 after months of stomach trouble. Funeral services were led by Rev Simms of the Methodist church. The child was bright and attractive and the family mourns deeply. The Sun offers sympathy and solace in the belief she rests now in Heaven.
Frank Thompson, formerly of this county, died April 13 at his brother Thos L Thompson’s home in Oakland California after a brief illness. He was raised in Washington county and leaves relatives in the area. He was the son of Mrs. James Thompson now of Allen New Mexico and brother of Joe Thompson Texas Ky and Silas Logsdon near town. The Sun offers condolences to the bereaved.
Resolutions note the death of William Lambert on April 9 1907 at age 48. They express sorrow and sympathy to his family and pledge to record the resolutions in the minute book and send a copy to The Springfield Sun for publication.
Mercer County residents are urged to attend a tobacco growers barbecue in Harrodsburg on Saturday May 4 1907. Growers meet at Mackville at 830 am for ranks and march to Harrodsburg with a commander in chief leading the procession armed with tobacco sticks. W M Natty chairs the county American Society of Equity urging stronger local organization. A follow up meeting is set for Thursday night May 9.
Preparations begin for a Saturday barbecue in Harrodsburg on May 4 inviting every tobacco grower in Mercer county. Indications point to the greatest day yet with brass bands and popular airs. Burley district growers who have not signed are rushing to join the 1907 crop.
A Fenwick A S of E Local meeting last Thursday night was well attended and fifteen ladies joined the local. The group expresses pleasure at the growing female interest and notes the potential impact of new members on the organization’s success.
Arrangements are complete for a Harrodsburg barbecue and rally by the American Society of the Fair Grounds. Growers meet at the courthouse at 10 o clock and march to the barbecue grounds carrying tobacco sticks. Speakers include President Clarence LeBus of the Burley Association Hon W C McChord of Springfield and State Senator Campbell Cantrill of Georgetown.
An important Texas Local meeting is set for Friday night May 17 with all invited. County Organizer Wm Nally plans an A S of E Local at Humphrey's schoolhouse next Thursday with all invited. A second local is to be organized at Battle in Washington county Friday night with attendees urged to join.
The Blue Grass Manufacturing Company dissolved its partnership as its machinery was sold at a public auction last Saturday. A local company bought the equipment to incorporate and resume harness manufacture. A robbery investigation followed with police alerted across Louisville and Cincinnati, but no culprits or valuables were found until Tuesday when Mr. Hladky discovered the stolen items in his barn loft. The perpetrators remain unknown.
One night last week S J Hladky home in Springs addition was entered and a gold watch a diamond ring a plain gold ring and a pair of trousers valued over a hundred dollars were stolen Mrs Hladky slept in an adjoining room The notice urges stock owners to keep cattle off public highways and reminds the Sheriff of Washington County and deputies to enforce the stock law.
