The medal bears his name and the inscription. Combs’s act is also reported to the Carnegie Hero Commission. Powell received a life sentence in Frankfort penitentiary.

Barn Burned on Mrs Barnett Farm North of Springfield

A barn at Mrs Margaret Barnett’s farm, three and a half miles north of Springfield, burned around 1 am Monday. The fire destroyed the barn, wheat, corn, farming tools, and a sow with pigs, with no insurance and an estimated loss of 500 dollars. Fire Marshal Niekirk found no evidence of origin, though suspected incendiary causes.

Mrs Barber Will Contested in Nelson Circuit Court

In Nelson Circuit Court, Mrs Amelia Baldwin filed an appeal seeking to set aside the will of Mrs Cecelia Barber probated in County Court. The estate is valued around 200,000 with six codicils to the 1897 will alleged to have been forged or influenced by fraud and lack of sound mind. Tobacco Crop Killed by Drouth in Kentucky

In Frankfort on June 27 independ ent tobacco growers in Kentucky report two thirds of the 5000 acres planted in the burley district killed by drought. The drought near Frankfort and Shelby County threatens a near total failure of the 1908 crop. A tenant near the Shelby county line plowed up his patch to replant another crop. The limited plant supply will hinder resetting efforts. Bucklen’s Arnica Salve is recommended for wounds, sold at Haydon & Robertson’s for 25¢.

Tobacco Market and Stemnery Proposed in Springfield

Hon. A. P. Gooding of Lexington has been in Springfield negotiating with W. County Warehouse Co. to lease its warehouses for five years for a loose leaf tobacco market and stemnery. No final action until the board approves. a meeting is expected Friday. If approved, the project would offer employment to 100 or more men for five months yearly and serve Washington and nearby counties.

Waltons defeat College Boys in high scoring baseball game

The Waltons beat the College Boys 19 to 10 in a Monday afternoon game. Battery for the College Boys was Mayes and Durrett with McElroy and McChord. for the Waltons, Shultz and Simms. A second game between the Bardstown crack team and the Waltons is planned for Friday at the High School park. Admission 15 and 25 cents.
