Mrs Solomon Kays of Pleasant Grove escaped a fatal burn when her clothing ignited from a stove last Sunday. She wrapped heavy bedclothes around herself, avoiding running, and saved her life though she suffered severe burns. Dr Hystt treated her and reports she is doing well despite pain.
News from Texas reports the death Tuesday January 3 of Captain Alex Smith of Wale aged sixty-nine. He resided in Springfield about twenty five years ago and was the brother of Mrs. Mary Noe of this place and Mrs. Jane Logsdon of Fenwick. A Union Army veteran, he was famed for bravery and was a devout Catholic. Local citizens mourn his passing.
The many friends of Mr. R. H. Mulli are glad to learn he has been appointed guard at the Frankfort ey and will depart tomorrow to begin his duties. Representative W. D. Claybrooke helped secure the appointment, marking a second such appointment for Washington county after Mr. A. M. Ferris of Mackville.
Winter snow covers Mt Zion as farmers welcome the cold. Tobacco sales bring 15 cents per pound for Baily Pinkston. Families move and travel as students leave for schools in Nicholasville Bardstown and beyond. Mrs Cardwell of Shelbyville district speaks on the Woman's Home Mission Society. A society meeting is planned for January 21 at Mrs Sue Williams.
Lawrenceburg Kentucky January 6 W P Bell owner of the Royal restaurant has executed an assignment for the benefit of his creditors. Liabilities and assets schedule not filed. Bell previously ran a grocery business here five or six years ago. Friends regret his financial failure. Bail denied Nan Patterson a new trial on the murder charge of Caesar Young.
The two story log dwelling of T C Montgomery nine miles from town burned at noon with no insurance. The family was away, a back log may have sparked the blaze and nearly all contents were destroyed. Some kitchen furniture survived. clothing and most belongings lost in the fire. Neighbors urged aid to replace losses.
Kentucky tobacco growers move to form the Growers Independent Association aiming to market and handle their own product. Henry R. Prewitt and G. W. Beisal accompany state officials seeking New York capital. reports cite a need for up to ten million dollars, with initial subscriptions totaling over one million already secured in Cincinnati and Louisville.
Mr J W Gordon received his commission from Gov Beckham on Monday to fill the unexpired term of Mr J R Mayes who resigned for his daughter's health. The paper predicts Gordon will be a good officer and work for the county’s best interests.
Mr. John C. Shader plans a new grocery at the O Gara stand on Main Street within a week or ten days. He previously ran a grocery here about a year ago before taking a traveling salesman position.
Monday night Fonza Davis shot his wife in the arm causing a severe wound. He says the shooting was accidental and aimed at another person. He is jailed awaiting an examining trial. Also announced is the engagement and forthcoming marriage of Joseph Stirman Claybrook of Grundy DecIntire Claybrook to Miss Cora Vernon Smith of Bardstown.
Found dead in a field near Merri mac a boy named Harvey Bridges, likely killed by an accidental gun discharge while hunting with his Iowa family visiting Taylor county. Reports also describe a severe shotgun accident injuring master Turner Horde and another boy Jefferson Morris with potential amputation for Morris.
Wright, long time Danville Ice and Coal Co. book-keeper, left Lyons Nichols after nine years of efficient work. The two unnamed men were well recalled by their employers and will reside on Third street. One is a grandson of the late County Judge McIntire, with Washington county friends sending congratulations.
Mrs. Sallie Hinton died at her son’s home near Frederickstown on Tuesday January 2 at 5 30 am aged seventy eight. A devout Catholic, funeral services were held January 4 at 9 am by Rev Father Pieters and interment followed at St Rose. She was mother to eleven children, six of whom survive, mourned by many friends.
Peoria Illinois January 6 Bishop John L Spalding suffered a severe paralytic stroke this afternoon attacking the left side of his body. He was unable to speak for several hours though head treatment aided speech later and he could converse with visitors this evening. The 65 year old prelate has been in fair health and fears of another attack persist.
A Springfield city wedding is planned with Miss Jennie D Claybrooke daughter of Mr and Mrs J R Claybrooke to Mr John L Offutt Bloomfield Nelson county prominent farmer stock raiser. The exact date is set for about February 15.
The infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Jas Troax died last Thursday and was buried the next day at New Hope cemetery. Ernest Goatley and family left for Detroit Michigan this week. Winter weather prevails with several large crops of tobacco unsold in the area.
A rock smashed a window as the accommodation train passed Smith's Switch near Boston on Saturday evening. The rock struck the inner shutter, leaving passengers protected. no injuries were reported. A suggestion urged the L. and N. to equip steel cars with screen coverings to shield riders.

A freight train struck and instantly killed eight year old Jesse Hobson, son of Will Hobson of Rover Wheel Co., at Maywood five miles south of Stanford on Saturday at 9 20 in the morning. Final agreements have been reached to consolidate the Lafayette National and First National Banks of Cincinnati.
Miss Etta Lee Rains and Mr. T. H. Went were married at Dr. BE H Pierce’s home last Tuesday evening at eight oclock in a small ceremony with only close friends present. Mrs. Wright.
T J Philipps visited William Carrico of Nelson county last Wednesday and Thursday. Nick Mudd is quite sick. J B Humphrey and family of Frederickstown moved to Louisville last Saturday. H Wimsatt and wife visited W S Hinton last Sunday. B Bland is on the sick list. Mrs John Hinton sprained her ankle.

Arnold of Maud sits at her father’s bedside, the ill Mr. C. B. Cheatham. Mesdames H. B. Greenwood and R. A. Foster were in Springfield. W. S. Gibbs went to Atlanta on business.
