In a violent storm a rider crosses a swollen brook on a rope aided by a groom. The rope breaks and the narrator grasps a man with a knife, then Sydney Lascelles is revealed as the attacker. The scene ends with the narrator drowning, later saved by memory and a rescue, while another death shocks the castle.
