Wendeborn Named Manitoba Public Health Director

Ralph E. Wendeborn of Winnipeg and former Elma resident is named Director of Public Health and Welfare Education for Manitoba, starting September 1. He brings twelve years of teaching, seven in Winnipeg, plus forest conservation work. He succeeds Dr. Margaret Nix who leaves for McGill.

Lac du Bonnet Memorial Centre clears debt on curling rink

The Lac du Bonnet Memorial Centre reported it is debt free including the $10,000 curling rink opened January 7 1950. After loans totaling $7,000, all debts and upkeep costs are paid with a July 1 profit of $4,500. The centre now values at $40,000 and plans an indoor skating rink with a three member committee to study feasibility.

Brokenhead Fall Fair entertains despite rain and small crowd

The 26th Brokenhead Annual Fall Fair at Beausejour on Friday September 25 drew a medium turnout due to rain. Entries from many points showcased outstanding exhibits though livestock were down from prior years. A notable display by the Little Stitchers and Gold Diggers Club under Mrs D Laneway impressed attendees. Prize winners will be listed in next week’s issue.

Golden Wedding Anniversary Celebrated At Newcombe

Upward of 200 relatives and friends from Foston Winnipeg Beausejour Lac du Bonnet and district gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Wold of Newcombe Man on Sunday September 6 to celebrate the golden wedding anniversary. A lunch and dancing followed a presentation on behalf of the community. The Wolds who moved to Newcombe 45 years ago expressed thanks to all contributors, especially Mrs Hans Erickson for the cake. It was the third anniversary cake she made for the Wolds.

Beausejour Jaycees Host Visiting Junior Chambers

Beausejour Jaycees gear up to host the Region No 4 Junior Chamber convention on Oct 24 and 25 with delegates expected from at least ten outside chambers and Kenora representation. Registrations start Oct 24 at 7 p.m. at the Howland Hotel, followed by Party Night events, while Oct 25 features a business session at the Beausejour curling rink. Morry Shuster coordinates arrangements. Since forming two years ago, the local Jaycees have raised nearly two thousand dollars for local charities, including the fall turkey shoot that draws Winnipeg and Eastern Manitoba visitors. this year the shoot may extend beyond one day.

Keewatin Couple Celebrate Twenty Years at Ladywood

A surprise party in Ladywood hall on September 19 honored Mr and Mrs John Szajewski of Keewatin Ontario for twenty years of marriage. They received an eight piece set of dishes and expressed thanks to all attendees.

Seven Sisters Club Elects Officers for 1953 54

The Seven Sisters Community Club held its annual meeting on September 17 and elected Howard Leith as president and Stan Gittins as vice president for 1953 54. Other officers include Mrs H E Baker secretary and Mrs A O Kinghorn treasurer with a full board and committees listed. A postmeeting lunch followed served by the social committee.

Dolores Sternat Weds Eddy Peluk At St Peter And Paul

Dolores Sternat married Eddy Peluk on September 12 at St Peter and Paul church Ladywood in a double ring ceremony officiated by Rev Litkowski and Rev Bory. The bride wore French lace with nylon tulle. her gown featured a V neck, flypoint sleeves, and a lace bordered train. She held red roses and white carnations beneath a fingertip veil. Community thanks for July 1 celebration unity

The Lac du Bonnet Memorial Centre executive thanks volunteers for the July 1 celebration. The event has grown into a large community effort requiring planning and day-of tasks. The paper notes the curling rink payoff and plans to improve facilities and pursue new projects with ongoing support.

Anniversary and Birthday Observed at Greenwald Barn

A twenty fifth anniversary party for Mr and Mrs August Petznick of Greenwald was held September 19 at their barn. Gifts included silverware an electric ash tray a kitchen clock and a corsage for Mrs Petznick. Elsie Petznick marked her sixteenth birthday with a two red rose corsage and gifts. Attendees included out of town guests and Henry Zacha captured the event on film. Music by Eddie Schnellert and friends provided the entertainment.

Brokenhead District Visits and School Reopening News

Weekend visitors included Mr and Mrs J Boleschuk and family, with other Winnipeg and Allegra guests. White Poplar school reopened September 4 under teacher Mr Slusarchuk. Ted Mosquin attends University of Manitoba in year three of Agriculture. Brokenhead senior students visited Ladywood school for a softball game, losing 13 to 1, both teams playing well.
