The Beaver welcomed a large crowd of about 2,500 people on Saturday October 3 for the grand opening. The event featured tours, speeches, and community remarks signaling a new start for the town venue.
An Open House at the Beaver Lumber Co. Ltd. Beausejour store drew over 2500 attendees as Mayor Oscar Russell and company executives praised the modern, 43000 square foot warehouse and 1500 square foot sales floor. Prizes were awarded to E Buyarski and Mrs H Litke, while local residents toured the expanded facility and thanked Beaver Lumber for investment in the town and surrounding district.
Dr H Northfield Lions District Governor from Duluth Minnesota addressed Beausejour Lions Club at the Beausejour hotel on Wednesday night. He urged democracy over totalitarianism, calling for love, sacrifice and integrity to advance peaceful justice and praised the club’s community work led by Lion Chairman H Geneske.
Mrs Fred Preston returns from Kaslo B C after holidays. Birthday greetings on September 27 to Mrs C Matthew Teddy Henley and Master Kenny Ketola. Anniversaries for Mr and Mrs G Oakley and Mr and Mrs J Pecchia. Mrs Laurilla visited the city. Shirley Martin Lac du Bonnet resumes duties after sick leave. Florence Knox and Teddy Henley celebrated with a party on September 13. Elmer Mattson returns from Kaslo. Mrs Dunwoody back from hospital and recovering. Diane Apritchard returns to Winnipeg after month working in local store.
The 26th annual Brokenhead Agricultural Society fair in Beausejour on September 25 awarded prizes across cattle sheep poultry and extensive home crafts and foods. Top honors went to Mroz Chorney McLean and Naaykens among many named competitors and sponsors.
Pine Falls news recounts visits from Mrs. E Sterling in town, welcomes new granddaughter Gaylene Dolores to Art Witt, lists births at Pine Falls and Fort Alexander hospitals including Isabel Marion Margaret Fontaine and Gaylene Dolores Witt, notes Rebekah Lodge veteran jewel awards for fifteen years, and mentions kindergarten classes starting with 32 pupils under Mrs. Coubrough.
The Ladies Hospital Auxiliary at Pine Falls held their annual meeting on Monday September 28. They reported $1098.00 raised during the year and new hospital window drapes and plastic curtains installed. New granddaughter Margaret Elizabeth born Sept 24 to Mr. and Mrs. Munro at Pine Falls hospital. Also notices of visits, teas, and upcoming plans to improve nurses quarters and linen supply. Officers elected include President Mrs Rigg and various secretaries and conveners.
The Canadian Red Cross Society schedules a Beausejour blood donor clinic for October 30 with committees formed to tally and register donors. Last year 144 bottles were used locally and 90 were donated previously. this drive aims for at least 200 bottles. R. V. Smith chairs the local Red Cross committee with William Horodyski as convener.
Lady Patricia Ramsay arrives in Montreal after flying from England and stops on the east coast before traveling to Calgary with Admiral Sir Alexander Ramsay. She will present the new Queen's and regimental colors to the Second Battalion PPCLI.
Visitors at the Pearce home include Mrs Pulford sister Thorp and Mrs Holmstrom. Mrs Jack McLean and daughter moved to Winnipeg for winter. Emily Pearce returned from three weeks on the coast. John Korlewich shows a 1953 Ford. Birth announced for a baby boy 9½ lbs. United Church opened Sept 27 with Ralph Connelly. Welcome new district residents Mr and Mrs E Minnie and Mr and Mrs Ireland. Mike Wasney visited Kenora. Claria Veetkovich weekend at parental home. Shirley Bogie celebrated 15th birthday. Victor and Mrs Anderson visited Pearce.
