Lac du Bonnet Gets Mercury Vapor Street Lights

At a July 13 Lac du Bonnet council meeting the Manitoba Power Commission won approval to install ten mercury vapor street lights five on Park avenue and four on Third street. The 300 watt lamps should markedly brighten the town, with work expected to start in October and the new lights set to go on the night of September 22.

Seven Sisters Hospital Guild Opens 1953-54 Season Meeting

The Seven Sisters Hospital guild held its first regular meeting of the 1953-54 season at Community Hall on September 14 with full attendance led by president Mrs. G. L. Carr. Reports were reviewed, activity during summer noted, and plans set for fundraisers, gifts, and a Fun Fair near Halloween.

Silver Tea Aids Whitemouth Hospital Fundraiser

Whitemouth district hospital and Rennie guild hosted a silver tea on September 12 at Mrs E A Ans home with Rennie ladies assisting. A home cooking sale, apron sale, and cake donation supported the event joined by a Dixie Lee club dance. Proceeds totaled $127.45 for the hospital.

Village of Lac du Bonnet Council Session September 14

Village council chaired by Mayor Edythe M Brown grants permission for a Lac du Bonnet Legion War Memorial at Park and Lake Avenues and plans to reserve 1000 from this year's Public Works for Third Street improvements next year. It defers a 1000 grant to next year and asks Manitoba Hydro Board to review local drainage and water quality letters while approving several small payments including WCB and local vendors.

Visitors at the Black home praised Beausejour’s growth. Local Jr and pupil Genevieve Horodyski studies at St Joseph’s Lorette while Leo Horodyski attends St. Paul’s Winnipeg. Rae Hoban received a silverware set and corsage at a shower. Beausejour accounts record weddings, trips, and social teas, with notes on residents' education and hospital staff changes.

Powerview Council Acts On Nuisance Ground and Infrastructure

The Powerview council met September 15 with Mayor H. J. Parent presiding. They reviewed the Electors Roll revision, considered altering the nuisance ground plan, discussed Hospice Tache regarding Mrs. Lea Malo, and addressed after hours bylaw enforcement. Nominations for Councillors and School Trustees were set for October 13 with an election possible October 23. They advertised bids for two tax-sale parcels, explored new milk deliveries, and weighed two high pressure pumps for fire protection, with further study. Highways speed signage on No 11 was requested, municipal aid recipients to work on public projects, and refund actions for Rose and Houston. Ditch and culvert work, a $1,000 refund to H J Parent, and highway ditch cleanup were approved. Three loads of gravel would repair the nuisance ground road.

Whitemouth Couple Celebrate Silver Wedding

Mr and Mrs Richard Jorgen, residents of Whitemouth and son of Whitemouth, marked their silver wedding anniversary on Saturday September 12 at home with relatives from Kenora and Winnipeg and many Whitemouth friends joining in music and square dancing. The Jorgenson couple received a chest of silver and other gifts. Mrs Jorgenson serves as president of the Whitemouth Anglican W A and is church organist.

Two Fort Alexander Indians Lose Lives in Winnipeg River

Andrew Kent a three year old Treaty Indian of Fort Alexander slipped into the Winnipeg River while playing with a toy boat. Ambrose Daniels age 46 another Treaty Indian of Fort Alexander jumped in to help and both were drowned one mile south of McArthur Falls. Bodies recovered by 8 p.m. by Constable Currie of Lac du Bonnet. Andrew Kent survived by his parents Mr and Mrs Fred Kent of Fort Alexander. Ambrose Daniels survived by his father Jacob Daniels of Fort Alexander.

Pine Falls Youth’s European Travel Memoir Recalls Countries

David Sharpe’s letter from London recounts three months in Europe visiting Norway Sweden Denmark Germany Holland Belgium Luxembourg France Switzerland Italy and Spain. M F U Local 210 met at Ladywood school with president Richard Kawecki introducing new secretary treasurer Joe Omichinski. Minutes were read, stewards appointed for fees for the November 1 opening year, and a Calgary conference report noted union membership at 40,000. Next meeting set for Sand Hill school on October 9.

Powerview Youth Killed in Weekend Accident

Powerview youth Mike Wadomski aged 19 died instantly in a head on collision on No 11 highway near McArthur Falls Saturday night. His companion John Picter aged 16 suffered head and neck cuts and is listed in satisfactory condition at Pine Falls hospital. The truck driver escaped injury. District coroner Dr L G Gunne says an inquest will be held.

Lost Lives and Child Accident Hazards
