New 11 Highway to Brookfield Corner Opens Route to Whiteshell

Armour MacKay Construction plans a 34 foot wide new highway starting the week of September 27 from Zeig's Corner to Brookfield Corner, 11.6 miles, with a 13 week completion window. Low bid by Paul Braun Construction Co. at 157,372 dollars, others higher. The route cuts distance Lac du Bonnet to Whitemouth from 37 to 23 miles and links to a planned Seven Sisters bridge and White Lake road. Local Lac du Bonnet council urges No 11 upgrade to spur pulp industry tourism and farm development in the Winnipeg river basin.

Wild Rice Harvest Begins in Northern Manitoba

The first load of this year’s wild rice harvest is unloaded from a Central Northern Airways float plane in the White Shell district. Northern Manitoba rice will go to the J. W. Wade Rice Plant at Lac du Bonnet for parching, beating, hulling and cleaning before shipment to market. Treaty Indians hand pick and bag the rice from various northern Manitoba and Ontario points. Powerview Reserve Soldier Drowns During Exercise

Harold Dignard a 19 year old reserve soldier from Powerview drowned Sunday after a six man patrol's plywood assault boat capsized at the Winnipeg River mouth during a combat exercise. The group wore life belts. four swam ashore while Dignard and another man clung to the craft for over two hours. The district coroner ruled drowning as the cause after the men reached shore around 1 pm.

Pat Lalor retires after 26 years at Pine Falls mill

Pat Lalor ended a 26 year career at the Pine Falls paper mill on August 31 after starting as a heater engineer on January 1, 1927. He and wife Mrs Lalor raised four sons including Fenton who was killed in World War II. He contributed to first aid efforts, winning the 1945 Waugh Shield with the team, and the union gave a silver tray while Mrs Lalor received a Bible and money. The couple plans to improve their home at Silver Falls on the Winnipeg River.

Spence Silver Wedding Celebrated At Home

A surprise party marked the silver wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. W. K. Spence at their home on Saturday September 7. Relatives, friends, and neighbors attended. games and a reading by Mrs. E Wilson entertained. Mr. Spence received a silver tea service and thanked guests. An Out of town group included Paul Wiebe, F Smith, Ken Gibson, J Gibson, Dan Gibson, Jean Patz and Shirley Gibson. France’s Theatre Guignol Mourguet opened in Lyon in 1808 and still performs.

St. John’s Anglican W A Holds Early Season Meeting

LAC DU BONNET St. John's Anglican W A held its first meeting of the season on September 8 in the parish hall with hostesses Mrs. Sparman, Mrs. McIntosh and Mrs. Wade. Sunday school starts September 20, a new superintendent is needed due to Mrs. Brown’s resignation. Harvest Festival and Sale set for September 21 in the Community hall with an auction, door prize, home cooking sale at 7:45 p.m., whist and canasta at 8:30. The annual fall bazaar is planned for November 19.

Lac du Bonnet Council Sees Public Works Increases and Drainage Complaints

The Rural Municipality of Lac du Bonnet met September 1 with Reeve E Wojciechowski presiding. Councillors Mazur Brincheski Horn Belluk and Clerk Teare handled drainage complaints, road repairs and a 4000 increase in highway maintenance to 10000. Public works expenses were approved including patching grading and drainage across multiple sections, with costs itemized and allocations shared with Brokenhead poetry.

Ladywood Boys Baseball Champs 1953

Ladywood captures the Bro kenhead river league title by defeating Green Oak 5 to 3. Green Oak led with two runs in the first and one in the fourth, while Ladywood answered with a single run in the third and four in the seventh. Archie pitched a strong game allowing five hits and two walks. Fans celebrated the end of Green Oak’s long hold on the trophy.
