In Lac du Bonnet the local Theatre Naming contest named Shirley Ann Shewfelt as winner. Her chosen title is Beckta Arcade, resulting in a brand-new theatre name for the town.
An electors meeting in Lac du Bonnet chose all mayor and council posts by acclamation. Joe Sparman becomes the village’s first mayor with Albert Arsenault and others as councillors, following a 1916 municipality origin and prior leadership by Frank Allard and W. D. Halliday.
Three candidates Tony Mucha John Pleskacz and Joe Horosco compete for Ward 1 on the council following Fred Mastaller’s retirement. A Ukranian hall meeting invites voters to hear each program as Fred Small seeks reelection against Chris Huber and Mr Chroplwy with election day set for Friday October 24.
A local circular advertises ladies white linen bloomers priced to clear. The assortment includes the popular jabot front bow style with short sleeves in sizes 14 to 20.
Evelyn Isabel McIntosh elder daughter of Mr and Mrs A McIntosh Lac du Bonnet married David Carey McKee son of Mr and Mrs J H McKee Vancouver in a double ring ceremony at Walmer Road Baptist church on September 13 at 2 30 pm. Rev S A Westcott officiated. The bride wore a white satin gown with drapeline skirt net bertha collar lily point sleeves and fingertip veil. She carried red roses and white gladioli with a white satin head-dress. Bridesmaid Miss Mary McIntosh wore a pink taffeta gown with pink skull cap and shoulder length veil and carried Picard gladioli. John Graham served as best man.
After a reception at the Hearthstone the couple left for a wedding trip to Niagara Falls and will reside in Toronto.
The marriage of A. Bert Larson and Mrs Helen Manchester occurred on Saturday October 11 in St Marys chapel with Rev J Gurka officiating. The couple exchanged vows in a simple church ceremony attended by family and friends.
Nicholas Swaluk son of John Swaluk of Cloverleaf and Adelaine Bialek daughter of John Bialek of Hazleglen were married Saturday October 11 at St Marys Church. Best man was William Hrynnik and bridesmaid Miss Francis Kuffner. Father Gurka officiated.
The Trout Haven bear cub George mauled a dead porcupine and needed quill extraction. Arch MacDonald restrained the bear while George’s attackers used pliers to remove the quills from its head, easing the distress with the help of coats for safety.
Mr Ambridge president and general manager of Abitibi Power and Paper Co. Ltd. visited Pine Falls with R J Askin and J O McKerrow to inspect town improvements including sidewalks and a new hotel. He plans to attend the hotel grand opening and hopes to visit each mill twice yearly.
Belated Thanksgiving plan in Lac du Bonnet features Harry Springman’s store window hit by a partridge. The bird becomes a casualty and is said to inspire a belated dinner for Roy. This marks a third such incident and hints a future strike at The Leader office.
The Associated Boards of Trade of Manitoba will hold their annual meeting and convention at the Royal Alexandra hotel in Winnipeg on Thursday and Friday, October 30 and 31. Registration starts at 9 a.m. on Thursday. D. G. McKenzie, president, will preside. Lac Du Bonnet and Beausejour boards are members and likely to attend with delegates from other district boards.
Nine year old Kenny Kahle suffered a fractured wrist Saturday morning October 11 when pinned between a coal wagon and a coal chute. He was passing between the wagon and the house as horses backed the wagon for unloading. The chute protruded into the bin opening and caught his wrist. The coal man noted Kenny did not cry out during the incident.
A wagon carrying young Terry Chercoe was chased by a posse led by Charles Fenwick Ray Mc Mannue and three cars after a team of horses bolted. The horses were halted and the boy escaped uninjured.
Nomination Day at Municipal Hall drew many ratepayers as two court cases dominated debate. Ed Henderson declines reelection after leading for 30 years. Thomas Harrison elected reeve by acclamation and vows continuity. Tony Kellner and George Rerick secure council seats by acclamation.
William Dreffs, born in Russia in 1873, died recently and funeral services were held October 7 at the Lutheran church in Beausejour. He came to Canada forty years ago with his wife and family, settling in the Golden Bay district. He leaves son Fred of Beausejour and four daughters, Mas, Emil Briene of Golden Bay, Mrs. Bether of Winnipeg, Mrs. Fred Lithe of Beausejour, and Mrs. J. Mazarick of Winnipeg. Burial followed in Beausejour cemetery. Rev. Moertelmeyer officiated. Russell funeral home assisted.
James Miller of Toronto husband of Ade line Miller died after a one year ailment. Born in Scotland 53 years ago he formerly lived in Winnipeg and later in Tyndall where he served overseas.
Old Timers gather in Lac du Bonnet to honor pioneer couple Hans Johnson and his wife at a golden wedding celebration. The scene includes longtime residents Arvid Bjork Mrs Wellman Mrs Wickman Mrs McCreaney J Hammerstedt Mrs Fors W J Peterson W D Halliday C Carlson Mrs Nasstrom Mrs Campbell Mrs C Carlson Mrs Waters and J C Small with the couple seated in front.
The obituary notes a World War I veteran who held the British War and Victory Medals. Survivors include his wife, a daughter Mrs. W. Robertson of Hamilton, Ontario, his father Robert Miller in Scotland, and four sisters including Mrs. Percy Barr of Wyoming Ontario plus three sisters in Scotland.
Elma C E Wendeborn and Ole Jokinen depart for Arm strong Ontario to work for the winter. Eric Vuori also leaves for Arm Strong to spend the season there. Dick Tuylevac plans a two week Port Arthur vacation. Carol Gustav returns from Dunnville to farm for winter. Several families visit relatives in Ontario towns.
A meeting on October 9 announced the War Memorial fund holds 7500 toward a 25000 objective. Activities are planned to raise funds and proceed with building. The drive will include a series of events to meet the goal.
Oakbank received the McKinney Shield in Class 4 from the Manitoba Good Roads Association judges. They cited well kept sidewalks streets and buildings, plus shrub planting, lawns and sanitation as key factors in the award.
Pine Falls Ten Pin schedule lists matches for Thursday Oct 23 with Selects facing Electricians and Solly's meeting Woods on alleys 1 2 and 3 4. On Tuesday Oct 28 Ford V8s play Selects and Woods meet Engineers on respective alleys.
