In Winnipeg and surrounding districts the three major parties campaign hard for the November 8 election while analyst Peter Regenstreis predicts low turnout comparable to the forties. Incumbent Dr. Joe Slogan leads, Ed Schreyer and Dr. W. Bilynsky gain ground, Social Credit silent after Thompson’s North Kildonan visit, voters await November 9 results.
Ed Schreyer NDP candidate spoke to over 90 in Lac du Bonnet about absenteeism tied to Joe Slogan. He cited a lawyer letter and presented his detailed attendance record from 1960 to 1965, arguing the issue was misrepresented and stressing the need for accountability and proper remuneration.
The North-Eastern Manitoba Teachers' Convention met at Whitemouth Collegiate October 7 and 8 with 204 teachers present. Dr William Bilynsky greeted attendees for the Agassiz School Division and Municipality, while M Hay spoke for local elementary schools. Inspector K Pokrant opened with remarks on purpose, direction, dedication and evaluation of teachers and pupils. About 150 teachers attended a banquet hosted by the White mouth Hospital Guild, introducing about 30 new teachers. The second day covered general convention business.
Lac du Bonnet principals R Dyne and L Brown outlined current school marking records at a Home and School meeting. They described a 100 percent scale updated for mid term exams and noted future trends toward continuous assessment with daily and weekly grading.
Dr. Joe Slogan spoke at Bissett and Manigotogan praising Conservative aid to gold mining and reserves. He cited $1.5 million since 1958 for mining support, roads to reserves, and community projects, and urged removal of the 11 percent lumber tax. He predicted continued northern Conservative voting patterns.
Directors of Petromines Limited approved selling the companys interest in two mining claim groups to Molybdenum Limited, an associate. A shareholding meeting to ratify the deal is set for October 18. One group, nine Cole Lake claims near Coles Lake Manitoba, shows molybdenite in pegmatite dykes and quartz veins with a drilling plan by N N Kohhanowsk i. The second group, nine claims staked in the Kenora Manitoba border area, connects to Ev ELode Mines near High Lake Ontario where 200000 tons of .63 MoS2 are outlined. A program of overburden removal and diamond drilling is considered. Petromines holds a controlling interest in Molybdenum Limited to assist.
Joseph Visca of Milner Ridge will retire from the Canadian Pacific Railway on October 20 after 19 years as a sectionman and relieving section foreman. Born November 15, 1900 in Naples and married May 3, 1926 in Winnipeg, he and wife plan to settle at Milner Ridge with five children in Lac du Bonnet Campbell Lake and Winnipeg. He is a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees the Canadian Legion and the Roman Catholic Church.
Alvin Nichol is appointed accountant-in-charge at Bank of Montreal Bissett branch succeeding Magnus Magnusson who moves to Winnipeg divisional headquarters. Nichol, born in Saltcoats Saskatchewan, previously served at Yorkton Neepawa Regina Maple Creek Souris and Assiniboia and led La Ronge branch since last March.
