The AFL-CIO approved renaming to Office and Professional Employees International Union to reflect highly skilled office work. Howard Coughlin states the change recognizes professionals like programmers and analysts and aims to improve wages and dignity through strong contracts and tailored representation.
Walter Gulenchyn, a former Elma resident now living in Winnipeg, was severely injured when his car was rear ended by Steve Kuchar of McMunn on No 11 highway two miles south of Elma. Kuchar and his young son suffered head cuts. Gulenchyn remained in serious condition in Winnipeg hospital.
A three way contest forms in the R M of Lac du Bonnet as H Olensky faces Ed Wojciechowski and Walter Zarecki for reeve. Acclamations fill Lac du Bonnet Village posts and Whitemouth ward seats with elected or announced candidates.
Dave Cousins was elected president of the Whitemouth Community Club at the annual meeting on October 5. Officers include vice-president Don Mikewich secretary Mrs. Alex Shewchuk treasurer Lorne Molinski and executives Mrs. Wm Bilynsky Mrs. H Schatkowsky Mrs. H Harrell Rudy Noel and Al Merke. A masquerade announced for October 30 at the town hall under club auspices.
In Manitoba politics the campaign devolves into accusations between NDP candidate Ed Schreyer and MP Dr. Joseph Slogan over absenteeism and personal attacks. Schreyer defends his 95 percent Manitoba Legislature attendance while stressing Bill of Rights and race equality. Liberal Dr. William Bilynsky advocates a positive campaign focusing on industry and jobs for North Kildonan and counters Slogan’s regional Atomic Centre claims. Prime Minister Pearson and John Diefenbaker figure in campaign fervor as Beausejour hosts a Coffee Party event.
The Knights of Columbus sponsor a door to door canvass in October to November for the CNIB campaign Help the blind reach New Horizons. Leonard J. Roy convenes the effort inviting Pine Falls Powerview and St George district residents to welcome volunteers and support services for low vision and blindness.
Lac du Bonnet municipal council met October 5 with Reeve Olensky leading. Delegations urged grain dryers, gravel needs, ditch work, a predator bait program, and beaver control. By laws 713 and 714 dissolve two school districts and transfer lands. trade-in with Powell for a 12E motor grader approved. Debates covered election staffing, drainage and grading charges, and a 1080 poison bait program for coyotes.
The Pinawa 4-H Club held its re organization meeting on Thursday September 30 at the Elementary School. Fifty two members elected Ruth McKeown as President Simone Plunkett as vice president Karen Schmidt as secretary Carol Putnam as treasurer and Jackie Russell as club reporter Projects include sewing and foods Leaders listed include Mrs G Gilmour Mrs M Routledge Clothing Unit A B C D and Foods Units with assistants across Units A to D A busy and successful year is anticipated by leaders and members.
The Curling Section foresees a busy winter with four ice sheets as a two sheet extension nears completion by early November. J Martino’s match and draw committee plans diverse leagues for women men and a mixed league with evening play and junior ice time. A registration evening is set for October 14 from 7 to 10 PM at the Curling Club.
A large gathering bid adieu to Mr and Mrs Precious before their move to Thompson. Residents from Great Falls, Lac du Bonnet, Pinawa and Whitemouth joined friends to wish them well. B Sinclair spoke of the community's regret, while Mr Precious noted a 21 year run in the area. Whist winners were recorded for ladies and men's hands, with hostesses named.
