Manitoba Lowers Education Grant Mill Rate to Stabilize Funds

Premier Douglas Campbell announced a two mill cut in the education grant formula to prevent a drop in provincial education funding for 1957-58. The move keeps total grants at least equal to this year’s basic level, with further amounts possible from more qualified classrooms. The change follows talks with the Manitoba School Trustees Association and the Union of Manitoba Municipalities and Urban Association, aiming to reassure boards and councils that the province will not reduce combined basic school grants despite higher assessments.
