Beverley Smiths Three Week North American Trip Recap

Miss Beverley Smith arrived home last Sunday after a 21 day holiday beginning in Winnipeg. She travelled by train to Vancouver then boat to Victoria and stayed four days with her aunt in Sidney. A five day visit with sister Roberta followed in Seattle then Portland Camas Washougal and San Francisco before returning home via Reno Ogden and Cheyenne.

Rovers Athletic Club elects officers for season

The Pine Falls Rovers Hockey Club held its season opening meeting at the skating rink on Wednesday October 2 selecting Don McCulloch as President J T Carey as Vice President A A Krueger as Secretary Cecil Cook as Coach Henry Halpin as Trainer Ben Van Malsen as Manager and Ken Walton to be asked to assume upon return from holidays An honorary membership was given to Don Robertson to note his reduced activity with the club A second meeting will set the league plans and season membership remains unchanged Also noted were bowling league delegates and a birth announcement at Pine Falls Hospital with a 10 lb 1 oz son for Mr and Mrs J Romanow.

The Pine Falls column lists residents traveling abroad and visiting, staff changes at Manitoba Paper Co, students pursuing studies in Winnipeg and at the University of Manitoba, and local church activities. Notable items include Mr N Collier’s two week holiday in British Columbia and Vancouver, Miss Betty Towler resuming architecture studies, and the Induction Service at Pine Falls United Church with Rev. John E. Hunter.

Pine Falls Student Council Opens Year With Constitution

The first meeting of Pine Falls Student Council was held Friday September 27. It discussed plans for the year and drew up its constitution. May Miller hosted guests September 28 with a pleasant meal. The girls PT class resumes in the Chateau twice weekly under Miss Hoffman and Miss Vickers. Grades I to VIII have a holiday October 4 as teachers attend a Lac du Bonnet convention. Girls and boys engage in baseball with plans for a new track field. Ross and Bruce Halpin returned from a U S motor trip visiting Minneapolis St Paul Rochester and other places and report a wonderful time.

Holland Bulbs Return to Canada After War Blockade

After occupation restricted bulb shipments, Holland resumes exports to Canada this fall. The first large cargo departed Rotterdam on September 3 and is expected to reach Montreal around September 18. From there bulbs will be distributed to commercial distributors nationwide.

Canadian wheat carryover slips to 69 million bushels

The July 31 Canadian carry-over of wheat stood at 69,858,181 bushels, down from 258,072,830 bushels at end of July 1945 and the lowest since 1938. The drop stems largely from a small wheat crop, with reductions also seen in oats, rye, and flaxseed.
