Reported in Francois Lake area bears menace fishermen by standing ground and snarling. They usually retreat when humans appear and are said to be unusually numerous this season. At George Smith’s mink ranch visitors wonder if a mink can count as one animal runs around its pen five times then washes its face, encircling the pen exactly five times.
A 12 year old Calgary zoo lioness has given birth again though keepers fear to inspect the den to avoid provoking a Kill. They expect the cubs to emerge for inspection in a week or two. Other brief items note Mrs Lasy Hickey teaching steeplejack work in Moose Jaw and a Braille watch theft in Regina.
Allan Brown caught a 16 lb pickerel at the Winnipeg River last week. He weighed the fish before mounting it for display in his living room. Allan used a River Runt Spook and a South Bend reel on a split bamboo rod to reel in the famed catch.
A September 23 gathering in Town Hall drew about 300 people including Denise Neilson of Battleford and Andrew Bileski of Winnipeg to support the Alberta Saskatchewan farmers strike. N J Stryk spoke in sympathy but warned speakers framed the issue as communism. A committee was formed and a resolution urging farmer support was proposed as half the audience stayed for the vote.
The Pointe du Bois Supply Co directors J R Devaney president S S Square secretary C A Anderson Spirito were re elected for another year on September 14. H R Eby J Garrett and A Brown also named to the board. A shareholders meeting September 26 approved last half year statements and the proposed dividend amid poor attendance.
German prisoner of war Fried Mascha was picked up by RCMP constables Watkins and Hamelin at the Lakeview Hotel in Lake du Bonnet less than 48 hours after escaping Shilo Camp. His suspicious behavior led to questioning and his subsequent return to Winnipeg.
Pine Falls reports Felix Kolesnich injured at the sulphite mill with sulfuric acid burns to both eyes. He is hospitalized. doctors note his right eye nearly normal and the left eye slowly improving as well. Best wishes pour in for a speedy recovery.
Canadian National Railways Veterans Association Western Region visited Pine Falls on September 23 with 57 members traveling in two special coaches. Local guides E Manson R Halpin and Ben van Malsen met the group at the station and led the party on a tour.
A tour of inspection through the mill preceded a view of the town's attractions by visiting party members. J. Neil served as secretary of the Manitoba division No. 1 of the Veterans Association of Winnipeg and led the group.
Funeral services were held September 25 at Winnipeg Falls Lutheran Church for August Knack with Rev Judt officiating. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery. Russell Funeral Home arranged. Mr Knack, who died September 22 at St Boniface Hospital, came to Canada 50 years ago and was among the oldest pioneers in the Seven Sisters Falls district. He is survived by his wife Amelia, one son and one daughter.
Burt Dwyer returns to his post as jailer at Queens county jail in Charlottetown. He was fired last July for permitting an inmate to go to the Department of Veterans Affairs daily to collect unemployment benefits.
The last two grain ships left Churchill Manitoba last week, raising annual wheat exports to an unofficial 2,800,000 bushels. It ranks as the fifth best season for ships and shipped quantity. In 1936 fourteen ships carried away 4,293,000 bushels. The Hudson Bay Route also brought imports when the Dalgleish line called at Churchill, unloading whisky curling rocks and china.
On Saturday evening September 21, a bus carried 34 members of North Star Lodge 1.0.0.F. to Pine Falls Lodge No. 63 10.0.F. The visitors were hosted at Johnson's restaurant for dinner and then toured the local paper mill with guide A. B. Robinson. Chester Mark, a welder at the mill, greeted old friends during the visit.
Visitors attended a special meeting in the Lodge rooms followed by an enjoyable lunch. A programme of speeches by the visiting Brothers concluded the evening pleasantly before the party departed for Winnipeg at 12 15 a m with the call come again boys.
Margaret Irene Byman and Edward Marcus were married at 8 30 p m September 12 in Holy Trinity church. Rev Terence J Finlay officiated. The couple will reside in Pointe du Bois after a reception at the Blackstone in Minneapolis.
Edna Isabelle McCreary and Herbert Murray Thomson wed in a Sept 21 ceremony at Young United church in Winnipeg. The bride wore white sheer with lace accents. attendants included Mrs E Outhwaite as matron of honor and Harriett McCreary as brides maid. After a motor trip honeymoon, the couple will reside in Seven Sisters Falls with a reception held at Norwood Hall.
The Winnipeg Wartime Prices and Trade Board announces new maximum wholesale prices for grade A turkeys effective Sept 3, rising by two and a half cents per pound from 1945 levels. Prices for roaster and fryer chickens also revised with staged reductions over three months, order A 2085 consolidating prior poultry orders.
Wally, an assistant superintendent at Canadian Pacific Airlines Lac du Bonnet, bagged five geese with two shots as dusk fell on opening day. Using Canuck standard loads No. 6 shot, he dropped four of the five after sprinting into range, while friends searched the marsh for the missing bird.
The Seven Sisters Falls community club held its annual meeting on Thursday September 5. Treasurer A Oddleifson reported all departments in good form financially and otherwise. Officers elected include Honorary Presidents W H Carter E V Caton and B A ndeveen, President C Precious, Vice President Mrs E Holmes, Secretary E Rougeau re elected, Treasurer A Oddleifson re elected, Directors A Hobson A Sigurdson, Social Convenor Mrs S Melnick, Librarian Mrs E Rougeau, Dramatics Mrs G Ambrose, We Magazine E Outhwaite Mrs W Raines and Mrs J L Cousins. A vote of thanks was given retiring president Phil Cinq Mars for four years of service. Refreshments followed.
