John Weidman an old time resident of the Lac du Bonnet district died at St Boni face sanatorium on September 27 at age 69. The funeral was held at Lee River cemetery on Friday with many relatives and friends attending. Renshaw funeral home handled arrangements.

Born Manitoulin Island Ontario he homesteaded in Dauphin before moving to Pine Falls and working for the Manitoba Paper.

Leader Editor on Radio Show Praises St James Youth

A. W. Hanks editor of The Leader spoke on a Toronto radio program titled Whats Your Beef praising youth civic interest. He urged greater community involvement and reportedly also spoke on a national network. Hanks has been at Niagara Falls Ontario two weeks representing the Manitoba Division at a Canadian Weekly Newspaper association convention.

Hunting Season for Big Game Opens Nov 22

Manitoba officials announce the 1948 big game hunting season from November 22 to December 2. Moose regulations remain unchanged north of the 53rd Parallel. The early season is discontinued. the normal winter season returns for better tracking and meat safety. Deer hunting expected strong in the south. male elk may be hunted by Manitoba residents under a special license.

Wildlife bans extend to Woodland and barren ground caribou

Officials report the Woodland Caribou will remain in a closed season and Barren Ground Caribou will receive added protection. Sport hunting is banned except for special licenses to bona fide settlers in remote northern areas allowing one animal. A Dominion biologist survey seeks population trends to guide future management.

Truck Overturns Wrecks Auto Near Rivercrest

On Friday September 25 a truck loaded with quarried rubble overturned on No 1 highway a half mile east of Rivercrest. Driver Gordon Rumley attempted to avoid a trailer and braking failed as the heavy load toppled the vehicle injuring three others. Mrs Jones and car occupants Mike Stemalschuk and Frank Zolondek were treated at General hospital with varying injuries.

Manitoba Beekeepers Plan October Convention in Winnipeg

The Manitoba Beekeepers Association will hold its annual convention at the Marlborough Hotel in Winnipeg on Tuesday and Wednesday October 26 and 27. E C Martin Provincial Apiarist Manitoba Department of Agriculture says the two day program will include educational talks and demonstrations business sessions social functions equipment displays and a honey competition. Farewell party notes district couple departure

A farewell event was held for a couple leaving the district soon. H Eby spent last week holidaying in Winnipeg. Guests included Mr and Mrs J Zikman of Lac du Bonnet Mr and Mrs Bake Sr and Mr and Mrs Alan Bake Chester and Doreen Bake of Winnipeg at the Tyndall home. George Live recently returned for a week’s holiday and then left for University in Toronto.
