The Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment Protective Services Section notes year long participation in targeted firefighting training. Officers attended courses at Winnipeg Provincial Fire Commissioner’s College and Manitoba Fire Chief’s School, while others trained at Ansul Firefighting School in Marinette Wisconsin and Ontario Fire College in Gravenhurst. All graduates posted high marks, with Y Schmidt leading the third week and earning a minor award.

W Arch Bryce ex ecutive director of the Canadian Highway Safety Council warns drivers to anticipate erratic maneuvers and avoid potential crashes. He urges vigilance for lane changes without signals and unsafe speeds and promotes road safety projects and Safe-Driving Week December 1 to 7.
A Lac du Bonnet farmer, John Cunningham, was fined $1,009 and costs for keeping an unregistered still with a 60 gallon daily capacity at an abandoned farmhouse barn. Evidence showed a large commercial operation with significant equipment and power lines. two co-defendants’ cases are pending.
Sixteen boys of the 1st Pinawa Troop finished an eight week fire fighting course led by the Fire Chief. A November 24 written exam awarded two prizes of 2.50 each to the top juniors and seniors, plus the scout fire manship badge. Adjudicator was Mr. R. B. Banham. Senior prize shared by David Robertson and Bill Fitzsimmons with 73 of 75. junior prize won outright by Jimmy Lamb.
Seventeen boys completed the fire fighting course with 71 of 75 points and earned their firefighters badges at a troop meeting on Friday November 26. Presentations were made by R B Banham Fire Chief Tom Lamb and group officials. Del Dunford led a tribute to the Fire Chief, and a Camp Alloway film showcased a summer gathering with Lac du Bonnet Great Falls Beausejour and Pinawa troops. Recipients include David Robertson Bill Fitzsimmons Jimmy Lamb Keith Jones Roy Smith Keven Walterson Robin Lamb Jim Dunford Donald Hart Allan Mills Fred Robertson Bruce Dunlop Del Dunford Jim Schwartz John Putnam Lyall Taggart.
Worona Bros Ltd announces a gala opening on Saturday December 4 in Lac du Bonnet featuring the Tumbleweeds. An afternoon entertainment and evening dance will accompany displays including several 1966 model cars. Vic Ed Walter and Casmir promise surprises.
A 4-H club organized in Grand Rapids on November 8 with 40 girls enrolled. Officers elected include President Angela Huff and Vice President Janis Braund. secretary treasurer Maria Cook. news reporter Marina Kutzner. Units schedules set for sewing and food classes. leaders listed for each unit and finance tasks assigned.
At the November 22 Lac du Bonnet Chamber of Commerce nine members attended. The group discussed road and tourism issues, plans a letter to Public Works about Pointe du Bois and mine-site roads, and talked of raying for a rebroadcast station and airfield options. A resigning VP was noted and a nominating committee was named for January 24.
Merrily Frayne of Pine Falls represented Manitoba in the Grey Cup parade. Daughter of Mr and Mrs Lawrence Frayne, she had been crowned Miss Manitoba at Red River Exhibition last summer and later chosen to represent the Manitoba Travel and Convention Association float as Miss Manitoba due to the current Miss Canada holder touring Europe.
A ladies trio from Central Pentecostal College Saskatoon will perform at Full Gospel Church Lac du Bonnet on Thursday December 9 at 7 30 p m. The college president Rev A C Schindel will accompany the group.
The Great Falls 4-H Club held a successful smorgasbord at the Curling Rink on Sunday evening November 28 from 5 to 7. Over 150 people attended enjoying turkey pork beef meat balls potatoes and vegetables salads and desserts. Tea and coffee were served by club girls with help from leaders Mrs W Warren Mrs O Mendella Mrs J Morgan and members' mothers. Proceeds will fund new uniforms for the girls and the town supported the cause.
A 19 year old Beausejour youth died in St Boniface hospital after a two car head on collision Saturday night on Highway 4 four miles west of Beausejour. Clifford Steffas of Beausejour driver of the car carrying the deceased was in fair condition. Gerry Martino of Pinawa and his wife Sheila were treated and released with Sheila in good condition. The Steffas car was westbound and the Martino car eastbound at the time.
