Premier Duff Roblin officiated as the Grand Rapids Power Project began operation on Saturday November 13. About 180 attendees heard Chief speaker H. Crocker of New Brunswick discuss using the Grand Rapids design for a new St. John’s River project. D. M. Stephens announced a fourth unit and new transmission lines to bring Nelson River Hydro power to Southern Manitoba by 1968, with power to The Pas improving from diesel.
Victoria Beach resident notes prizes at a Carman mink fur show with John Ateah winning grand and reserve champion. Lawrence Runert travels to Port Arthur to visit relatives. Bo Corriea of Whitemouth, an employee of Syderko Enterprises in Lac du Bonnet, narrowly avoided serious harm after his oil and gasoline delivery tanker skidded off an icy road near Pinawa. The truck rolled, he was pulled from the cab by two drivers, treated at Pinawa Hospital, and released. About 150 gallons of fuel oil spilled. 200 gallons of gasoline remained in tact. Fire crews burned the spilled fuel to prevent further danger.
The November 9 meeting featured a panel on dropout causes and remedies with A. Home and School Association Laroche Smith Freund addressing underachievement, parental attitudes, and the need for guidance counselling. They urged teacher and citizen involvement and planned a future discussion. UNICEF funds were raised, and a Christmas concert was announced.
Five delegations appeared before Lac du Bonnet Municipal Council on November 2 with requests. Reeve Olensky noted roads under Plan of Survey remain non municipal while Apsit sought road drainage help. Council approved attendance at the Union of Manitoba Municipalities convention in Winnipeg and set per diem, car mileage, and appointed voting delegate. Purchasing tax sale certificates, a land purchase, and the hiring of Ian Hark ness as caretaker were decided. A Kodak copier was approved for purchase and a land sale by tender was ordered for certain parcels.
Whitemouth flag football defeated Beausejour 27 to 1 on Thursday November 4 to claim the Agassiz Trophy. Key plays included a 70 yard pass and run by Ken Lozinski and a blocked kick TD by Randy Melnick. Earl King, Lozinski and Bill Lehman stood out for Whitemouth.
A swarm of bees at a maximum point has a population of around 50 000. The note records a high concentration in the area and signals potential impacts on local agriculture and ecology.
A large fire badly damaged the carpenter shop at the Manitoba Hydro plant in Great Falls last Wednesday morning. Fire crews controlled the blaze and all equipment and tools were moved to safety with no injuries reported.
The Community Church Auxiliary held a Friday bazaar tea and bake sale at the Great Falls Recreation Centre. A large out of town attendance despite icy roads led to a successful fundraiser with a fish pond games tables and craft items. Winners included a transistor radio a turkey and various prizes. Scouts assisted and were thanked for organizing games.
The Manitoba Drama League hosted an actors workshop in Great Falls on Saturday November 13 led by Miss M Duthie and Mr Geoffrey Spurll showing play production acting and directing. Participants from Great Falls Pine Falls and Pinawa learned about choosing strong plays stagecraft blocking and French Scenes in a full day of instruction with practical demonstrations and a group meal.
