Mission week at Zion Church Beausejour led by Rev K Freitag

Edmonton clergyman Rev K Freitag will conduct Lutheran services during a mission week at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Beausejour from November 11 to 18, with German and English sermons including Shall be my brother's keeper and I will rise and go to my father. A closing rally will be held November 18 in Winnipeg Civic Auditorium.

Funeral for Rev. Captain George sentO C.A. at St Jude’s

A large congregation gathered at St Jude’s church on Wednesday October 3 to honor the late Rev. Captain George sentO C.A. who died Saturday October 27 while helping a stalled car on No 22 highway near Grand Marais. Five Winnipeg clergymen led the service two thirds could not enter the church and after the service the body was sent to Winnipeg then shipped to Toronto for burial.

Elma Postmaster Retires After 34 Years Service

Elma hosts a farewell dinner for postmaster Wendeborn and wife after 34 years in Elma Manitoba touching many townsfolk with service. Guests honor them for civic work in education health welfare and community building including hospital support and social aid.

St Theresa Guild Outing and Local Births in Pine Falls

The St Theresa Guild event at the Hall drew about 75 attendees with prizes awarded including a Rose-wave Permanent won by Mrs. R. Bowman and various bridge and whist prizes for men and women. About $150 was raised for the guild fund. October births at Pine Falls Hospital include Marie Jeanette Palardy, Brenda Lea Mary Dankowski, Lloyd Brian La Forte, Robert Erwin Frank, Terry Wilfred Ir a, Gerald Yaworek, Donna Marcelle Sherstone, Douglas George Shupe, Ferdinand Joseph Allen, Pamelia Richardson, Cynthia Ellen Lorella. Deepest sympathy to the Brewster family over Stan’s death from a hunting accident.

The Manitoba Electoral Boundaries Commission starts preliminaries for new lines across 47 constituencies. R H Avent hired as cartographer works in the Legislative Building Speaker's room. Chief Justice Adamson notes limited progress lacking complete 1956 census data. Members include Dr Hugh Saunderson and Charland Prud’homme, forming Canada's first independent redistribution commission.

Rural Women Visit New Children's Hospital

More than 200 rural Manitoba women from Seven Sisters Falls and Whitemouth toured Winnipeg’s near completed Children’s Hospital ahead of its official December 2 opening. They were delegates at the 10th annual Manitoba Women’s Hospital Auxiliaries Association convention, running Oct 29 to Nov 1 with the Manitoba Hospital and Nursing conference. Tea followed tour hosted by the Children’s Hospital Nurses Alumni Association.

Halloween Dance At Lac Du Bonnet Draws Costumes

A Hallowe en party at Holiday Beach Dance Hall on October 31 drew a good crowd in costumes. Prizes went to Most original Mr and Mrs Waters as Davey Crockett and an 1880 lady of the time, Most comical Nick Soroko in baby attire, Best couple Marion Nesper and Ann Arneson as cats, and Fancy costume Mrs Ray Maxie of the Lockport Hotel.

Bernie Wolfe Heads C of C

Seventy-one municipalities attended the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce convention in Winnipeg on November 3 and 4. Bernie Wolfe of Transcona was named president, with J. W. Wade of Lac du Bonnet as one of four vice presidents and one of eight directors at large. The meeting approved plans for a provincially sponsored corporation to aid municipal sewer and water projects and discussed grain marketing, storage payments, a Rat River dam project, and school and highway safety measures among others.

Two District Students Win Scholarships

The Senate of United College awarded two scholarships at the annual commencement at Westminister United Church on Tuesday November 6. Suzanne Irene Lucas daughter of Mr and Mrs George H Lucas of Bissett Manitoba received the J S McLean Scholarship. Ann Jorgenson daughter of Mr and Mrs S B Jorgenson of Great Falls Manitoba received the United College Women's Auxiliary Entrance Scholarship. The exercises featured an address by Honorable Mr Justice Samuel Freedman of Winnipeg.

Martin Preston wedding at St James Anglican Church

Agnes Eileen Preston and Raymond Michael Martin wed in a double ring ceremony at St James Anglican Church on October 27. Rev M Goodman officiated as the bride, from Pointe du Bois Manitoba, married the Rosebud Alberta groom. The couple will reside in Rosebud after a two week trip through the United States.
