Research Scientists Eliminate A Freshwater Parasite

A Canadian team led by Dr. G H Lawler at the Freshwater Institute Winnipeg studied Triaeno phorus crassus in whitefish and northern pike. By 1960 they halved pike and eliminated the parasite in Heming Lake, then extended work at Goldsand Lake in 1965 using varied nets. From 1965 to 1970 harvests ranged 1.62 2.91 lb per acre with 140000 lb pike in 1970. Researchers conclude selective fishing may protect other species and boost whitefish reproduction.
