Public safety notice urges extreme caution as Manitoba’s fishing season begins May 15. It highlights a yearly average of 57 drownings, with 60 percent in June to August, and boats involved in over half. Readers are urged to inspect boats, wear life jackets, avoid overload, monitor weather, and follow boating rules to reduce accidents.
Record attendance at the Whitemouth Hospital Guild Fashion Show held at Whitemouth Collegiate on Saturday May 1 raised 270 dollars for hospital equipment. Attendees came from Beausejour Seven Sisters Oldenburg Lonely Dale and River Hills to view spring fashions. A tea and raffle followed with winners including Mrs Lorne Molinski Whitemouth G Guer buin Seven Sisters Mrs Lorne Knopf Oldenburg Mrs Robt Fraser Whitemouth Barbara Karlecki Whitemouth.
At a Pine Falls School of Ballet meeting on April 21 plans were made for a jazz ballet demonstration to run Saturday May 16 and Sunday May 16 at the School Gymnasium. Miss Juliette Perry of Winnipeg will direct mixing classical ballet with the new jazz style. A motion approved two scholarships to the International Peace Gardens July 11 to 18. A new officer slate was elected: President Denise Dupont Vice-President Jean Coulombe Secretary Helen Pachowski Treasurer Irene Dugard Advertising Helen Farrel Special Events Margaret Tallifson.
Dennis Crook received a plaque from Cecil Lamont of Grain and Milling Company Winnipeg for best all round newspaper under 1250 circulation, with a certificate and $50 cheque. Steinbach Carillon News won top for over 1250 and best editorial page, W J Rowe Trophy for McMunn correspondent writing. Altona and Beauséjour Beaver followed. 46th Manitoba Weekly Newspapers Association convention held May 6–7 at Royal Alexandra Hotel.
Lac du Bonnet municipal council met May 4 with 14 delegates before Reeve H Olensky and councillors. Topics included damages claims for sheep killed by dogs, bridge repairs east of 10-15-11E, drainage ditches east of 27 22 15-16-10E, culverts, and requests for larger culverts on PTH No 317. Public works, engineers, and insurance plans were discussed. tenders sought for fuel oil and heating oil. and several officials were authorized to attend district meetings.
The 11th Conference of The Canadian Highway Safety Council approved a resolution for compulsory breath testing legislation in the Criminal Code and a statutory blood alcohol level. It urged a uniform traffic code, unmarked vehicles, and reflective license plates, while debating banning skate boards on roads and sidewalks. The event in Winnipeg featured panels on safety in recreation and leadership in water safety, with officials from Manitoba and Ontario outlining programs and funding priorities. Police chiefs from across Canada attended the two day meeting.
Mel McMullen, executive director of Manitoba Travel and Convention Association, spoke at the Great Falls Community Center under the Golden Boys Movement. He urged provincial travel, shared slides of Manitoba sites from Peace Gardens to Seven Oaks, highlighted Souris and Green Gables, and urged residents to See Manitoba First. The talk, invited by the Women's Institute, showcased local vacation spots and attracted a large audience.
Petromines Limited, a Winnipeg firm, gained control of nine mining claims at Cole Lake Manitoba about fifty miles northeast of Lac du Bonnet. The discovery group shows molybdenite in microcline feldspar pegmatite dykes with 95% MoS2 in native ore and Grah samples from 1.5% to 5%. A work program will begin after ice thaw, including overburden removal, sampling, assaying, and tests to decide on a drill program.
The Pine Falls Ladies Curling Club closed the season with a roast beef dinner at Mani tou Lodge and trophy presentations led by president Mrs. Shirley Lavallee for the 1964 65 season. Rae Webb and her rink won the Harrison Trophy Group A with Irene Dugard Margaret Pereux and Jean Harrison, each earning silver butter dishes. Lil Bosma’s Group B won the MacLaggan Trophy with Alice LaFrance Pearl Fredrick and Diane Erhart also receiving silver butter dishes. Webb’s foursome claimed the Rousseau Grand Aggregate. Mrs Martha Beskau and her rink tied for Grand Aggregate and received engraved silver coffee spoons after playoff. New officers elected for next season include President Mavis Jackson and vice presidents Joan Thomson and Margaret Richardson.
Pointe du Bois Curling Club held its annual wind-up and dance on Friday April 30. Prizes were awarded across three competitions with many named winners including Blondahl LeLuca Mikolaychuk Sualtys and Atkins Hodge Ketola and Neave. Music by Ed Saltys and his Coyotes capped the evening.
The Alaska bound Sgt Kenneth Keen owed his life to LACs Robert W. Elliott and George Sudletsky of RCAF Con- Ox Yukon who first detected distress signals April 27. The Albatross from Comox located the crash site after a weeklong search involving multiple aircraft and a Winnipeg radio link, with Keen flown to Watson Lake and Fort Nelson for medical care before returning to Fairbanks lighter by 36 pounds.
An anniversary party for Mr and Mrs Oli was held at the Legion Hall with entertainment by Wally Persian Leonard Rupert and their band. Dancing and a community lunch followed as the couple cut the cake and wished happiness to family and friends.
