The Lac du Bonnet Chamber of Commerce debated train and mail service changes amid a letter from Three Rivers on observing federal holidays. Anton Weselak announced June 4 rail changes with trains Winnipeg to Lac du Bonnet on Mon Wed Fri at noon. Mail will be trucked from Whitemouth, delaying service up to 12 hours. The group supported a Three Rivers resolution urging Canada Day to be observed on the first Monday of July, aligning with weekends to minimize disruption.
The Pine Falls Horticultural Society held its May 4 meeting at the Chateau with president E Kahle presiding. Guest speaker G S Reycraft, past Winnipeg Horticultural Society president, delivered films on homes and gardens and answered questions on soil preparation for flowers and vegetables.
The Pine Falls Knights of Columbus council elected officers for the coming year at a recent meeting. Grand Knight Gordon Mulligan and Deputy Grand Knight C. Cook head the directorate to be installed. Other officers include Recording Secretary Leo Seguin, Chancellor M. Tataryn, Warden J. Desilet, Advocate P. Sherstone, Inner Guard M. Pure, Outer Guard G. Wilcott, Treasurer L. Shea. The next meeting is set for May 20.
The annual meeting of local 212 MFU at Glenmoor school last week drew good attendance. E Schnellert was elected president and Aug Hemminger vice president. Emanuel Borkowsky Augusta Otto and Luella Borkowsky became recreation directors. G Kowalke is organizational director with N Galay educational director and H B Zirk legislative director. E Otto will handle publicity. A Talent search begins for an Amateur Night in Town Hall Beausejour on June 2.
A. A. Chipman announces a million dollar St John’s College building program at the University of Manitoba within a year. The plan includes a chapel and space for 300 lecture students with housing for 100 out of town students and continued theology and liberal arts courses using university facilities.
Farmers in Tyndall and nearby districts heard Jacob Schulz describe his Ottawa trip and brief from the Interprovincial Farm Union Council. He said parity prices are essential for farmers to coexist with modern society, noting ministers were open to discussion now. Also speaking were Joe Galensky and Dennis Nimchuk, with visitors from Broken Head, Beausejour, and Cloverleaf. Lunch and coffee followed.
The North Eastern Manitoba Chambers of Commerce plans a May 30 convention in Lac du Bonnet with morning sessions on live chamber programming and a film, afternoon talks on legislation affecting community progress, a dinner with speaker Tom Smith on merchandising methods, a film on Manitoba industry progress, and a social dance. Ralph Butchart, Bob Nicol, and Mike Kabaluk lead arrangements. a delegate wives tea is hosted by Mayor Edith M. Brown.
Rural Municipality of Lac du Bonnet heard multiple delegations at its May 1 meeting. Reeve Ed Wojciechowski and four councillors, plus clerk G F Teare, handled requests on road improvements, drainage and land transfers while amending grants.
Unseasonably cold weather prompts a further extension of muskrat and beaver seasons. Minister C F Greenlay announces muskrat season remains open to May 12 in areas that closed May 5, including Registered Trapline Districts and community trapping areas. Beaver trapping south of the 53rd parallel extended to sunset May 12.
March oil production in Manitoba rose close to half a million barrels with a daily average up 1 100 from February to 15 931. Total March output reached 493 857 barrels, about 65 000 more than February. Five wells were abandoned and sixteen new ones drilled, leaving 592 producing wells as of March 31.
The Sheep Shearing School will be held at the Arnold Golke Farm River Hills on Wednesday May 16 with a 10:00 a.m. start. The afternoon program covers general sheep production topics including parasite control nutrition and wool handling. Conducted by F Slovinsky Agricultural Representative and Livestock Fieldmen P Young and G Fulton of Canada Department of Agriculture. sheep owners and farmers are invited.
The body of Wm. J. C. Hart was found last Thursday six months after his drowning on October 26 in the river near Seven Sisters. Game warden Bill Thomas spotted the body at the Pointe du Bois bridge near Lac du Bonnet and alerted the RCMP. A patrol boat retrieved the body as it drifted downstream, the victim believed to have been pinned beneath a capsized boat during the incident.
The Whitemouth Hospital Guild sponsored a successful tea and fair in the school auditorium on Friday. Sr. Henry Steiner opened the event, praising supporters. A CGILT fish pond delighted youths, Walter Kitz of Rennie won a $24 doll, and the luncheon netted nearly $400 for hospital equipment.
Dr L G Gunne arrived home from Deer Lodge hospital last Friday following a lengthy illness.
The Lac du Bonnet Chamber of Commerce plans a May 14 to 20 clean up campaign following a May 1 meeting at Casey's Inn. Mayor Brown praised council support and announced inspections of lanes and streets to ensure tidy yards, litter removal, painted fences, and well kept lots. A park clean up on May 9 and berm and lake front area clean ups on May 16 are planned. The drive aims to attract visitors for upcoming conventions while highlighting the 1956 Teachers Tour stop on July 12. Clean Up Paint Up Light Up Fix Up Beautify your community.
Relatives and friends gathered at the Canadian Legion Hall Selkirk Man April 14 to honor Mr and Mrs George Woods Pine Falls on their 25th wedding anniversary. Guests included Mr Sam Dukinich and Mayor S Oliver who sent greetings. Mrs Woods was a member of the B F S L auxiliary. E Brooks presented a silver chest. Also noted, Mrs Woods parents Mr and Mrs E Green of Killarney celebrated their golden wedding on April 13. Delco GM has built an electric motor that closes the trunk on a Cadillac at key turn.
Red Cross officials announce a blood donor clinic in Whitemouth on May 15 at Sepee Auditorium as part of ongoing free transfusion service in Manitoba. Douglas Stewart notes last two years produced 85 bottles for Whitemouth Hospital and emphasizes universal access to blood and serum products, with weekly quotas of 1,000 bottles and ongoing need for donors to meet regional hospital demands.
