The Catholic Women's League of St. Theresa's Church hosted its annual St. Patrick's Day Tea and Bazaar at Pine Falls Legion Hall on March 17. Msgnr. Bellevance opened remarks praising Mrs. P Lalor for providing piano music and the event featured spring fashions, baking displays, and ruged denim play ensembles modeled by four year old Master Denysiuk. Helen Lazaruk and Linda Seguin sponsored and commented the show.
A bonspiel at Pointe du Bois on Saturday March 13 closed the Jam Pail curling season with ten rinks for ages six to twelve. In the Legion Event first-place went to Melanie Scott Ruth Cathy Dun woody John Matthew. second Debra Pohl Gail Sikora Marilyn Anderson Brad Anderson. third Charles Anderson Beverly Holm Margie Mocogni Kelly Kulczycki. consolation Cary Mikol aychuk Eric Fors Sharlene Magnusson Douglas Niemi. Powerview becomes first Manitoba community to gain Centennial project approval. The two governments provide a 2 per cent per capita grant to fund a park, playground and Centennial Memorial near the Municipal Offices along Highway 11. The total project costs about 3 309 dollars with 1 804 funded by the grant, and one mill annual levy covering the village share. Construction relies on volunteers with ongoing maintenance by the village. Continued on Page 6.
In Pine Falls a crowd gathered at Manitou Lodge to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs J Hundevad as they head to Brampton Ontario. Hundevad retires as woods manager after five years in Pine Falls and 17 years at Smooth Rock Falls. The event featured tributes from Abitibi officials, a skit, and gifts including luggage a wood carving and a token of money from camp workers. A second note recalls Union Local 2612 honoring Hundevad with a clock and plaque at Manitou Lodge on March 27 1959 it formed tribute dinner.
Astronauts Virgil Grissom and John Young reflect on Earth as Manitoba cesium, mined by Chemalloy Minerals at Bernie Lake near Lac du Bonnet, powers part of the nosecone on their five hour flight. Chemalloy controls the world’s largest pollucite deposit, supplying cesium for rocket fuel including the recent Russian flight. The upcoming U S Mars mission is planned to use Manitoba cesium as fuel.
The Pinawa volunteer Fire Department received an award at the March 22 training session. Town Administrator E Lundman presented a National Fire Protection Association certificate on behalf of the Provincial Fire Commissioner. The department earned an honourable mention and first place in Class F Manitoba, with Fire Chief T Lamb accepting for officers, men, and Pinawa residents.
Mr G M Davies Assistant Deputy Minister Education Manitoba addressed Pine Falls adults on pending changes in the school curriculum. Introduced by Mr G L Taylor and thanked by Mr T N McLenaghen, the meeting chaired by Mr T D Fortier noted reforms due to science and tech advances.
Lac du Bonnet hosts its first annual open mixed bonspiel with 23 rinks. Red Ahrensbach of Pine Falls led his rink to victory over D Struthers of Lac du Bonnet in the final. Prizes went to A Dales Seven Sisters and B Pounds Lac du Bonnet. In the second event G Klapprat Seven Sisters defeated V Hardy Lac du Bonnet, with C Mackelson Grand Beach and Olson Pinawa earning third and fourth. The Rat Race went to D Rumry Lac du Bonnet over E Amos also from Lac du Bonnet, with C Precious Seven Sisters and B Smith from A Banquet and dance followed at Memorial Hall.
At the March 22 Lac du Bonnet Chamber of Commerce meeting plans were made for an Agriculture Night on April 6 at Memorial Hall at 7 30 p m Agricultural representative Mr Lambert will discuss fertilizers and weed sprays for farmers aiming to raise production and quality The treasurer's report was not promising dues renewal was urged The membership chair resigned and was replaced A golf course project was discussed with AECL land options The village flagged a May clean up week and posters were ordered Delegates to the Manitoba Tourist Association conference were named The village council was asked to clear the fire site abbie and a committee explored Leslie Park recreation A boat show was noted and the federal building for Lac du Bonnet discussed The Canadian Water Ski Championship is slated for July 31 and August 1 A gavel was presented to the president.
