A large gathering celebrated the Lac du Bonnet Lions Club second anniversary on March 20 at Memorial Hall. Highlights included gifts to Lion Bob Dodman, pins for perfect attendance, a guest speech by Miles Phillips, and dancing with P Ryplanski and his orchestra. Guests included local officials and Lions from Pinawa, Beausejour, Bois Sevain and Winnipeg.
The Pinawa Club hosted its first annual mixed open bonspiel March 12 to 14 with Pinawa rinks winning all events. A event winner was Ben Banham’s rink Ludson’s Bay Trophy, defeating Kenny King Rosemary Reid Johnny Kepatz Hilda Tittlemier of Seven Sisters in a thrilling final. B event went to M Anderson over T Henley Pointe du Bois. C event captured by Ed Wuschke’s rink defeating Baldur Holm Lac du Bonnet.
The Pine Falls W A met March 15 at 8 00 pm after Holy Communion led by Rev J W Whitford Reports from secretaries covered Indian Residential School requisitions funded by W A rather than parishioner gifts and bazaar proceeds The hall debt was targeted for repayment and a Keewatin Diocesan Board meeting was announced plus a Diocesan Girls Auxiliary Festival April 24 in Great Falls and Pine Falls A World Day of Prayer service featured multiple church leaders and a $40 donation to the Women’s Inter Church Council of Canada.
Great Falls held its first high school bonspiel over Friday evening and Saturday March 19 and 20 with 10 rinks competing in two events. Lac du Bonnet Pine Falls Powerview and Pointe du Bois were represented. Ricky Smith and Lac du Bonnet won the first event while Gordon Pringle Pointe du Bois led the second event with Garry Sippola Powerview second. A community lunch followed by a supper and dancing closed the event.
A large turnout of teachers attended the Agassiz Division Association No. 13 Curriculum Workshop on Saturday March 20 at Lac du Bonnet Collegiate. Speakers included Miss S F Shack Isaac Brock Winnipeg on Elementary Curricula and Mr G K Breckman Stonewall on New Secondary Courses with others presenting on New Elementary Maths Secondary Science Elementary Social Studies and Secondary English.
To mark Canada's 211st National Health Week, Dr. G. Bronstein spoke to the Church of the Advent congregation during Sunday Martins service on March 21. He stressed that science and religion can never be in conflict with each other.
Dr G Bronstein speaks at a church urging unity across skin color and belief. He argues health and society depend on mutual respect, aiding the sick, and responding with alacrity to humanity’s needs as science advances. He links well being to community and environment.
Ken King and his Sev en Sisters rink won the mixed bonspiel at Seven Sisters held March 17 to 20 with teams from Pointe du Bois Rennie Pinawa Whitemouth and local clubs earning prizes in four events. Recipients included Tourist Hotel first event Ken King Wm Lawson Rosemary Reid Pat Morton second Gord Spence Rose Krampetz Keith Jarvis Sandra Krampetz third Ed Wuschke Pinawa fourth Brian Ans Rennie for event one. event two listed C Precious Ed Honke Ida Kuhn Kay Dorland Stella Roscoe Pointe au Bois first prize. second John Smith Robert Knox Carrie Ketola. third Ted Henley Pointe du Bois. fourth Max Allan Pinawa. Event three top Gord Klap prat Tan Ross Janice Lawson Darlene Beeskau. second Ed Malkoske Bob Fraser Ruth Malkoske Bernice Higgins. third Verne Schatkowsky Whitemouth. fourth Ed Molines.
Householders in Springfield received a questionnaire from their MP Dr Joe Slogan asking opinions on 55 questions. Many responses have already been mailed back and the MP expects to compile results soon, noting a history of Gallup Poll alignment and media interest in Ottawa.
The Bissett Closed Local Men's bonspiel on March 13 crowned George Townend and his rink of R. Meadows R. Molgjren and W. Townend as Grand Challenge winners. They defeated E. Adolf J. Hay L. Adolph and W. Wosny to take honours. Other events saw Gordon Bjork B. Shindruk L. Suknaki and A. Meade top J. Gebler T. Senior B. Staines L. Kowalchuk. San Antonio prize winners were Leonard Gendre with H. Bruce G. Gray B. Hood. second went to Jim Russell with O. Yatkowski J. Soloway B. Kowalchuk. third to Lloyd Shindruk A. Kowalchuk T Shier N. Meilleur. fourth to M. Magnusson R. Douglas A. Devlin L. Bressan.
Selkirk Mental Hospital invites residents to tour the Selkirk Hospital for Mental Diseases on Tuesday April 13 at 1 30 p m. Field Representative Walter Clarke said the event aims to inform the public and those wishing to attend should notify Mrs E Rousseau Lac du Bonnet before week’s end to manage visitors.
