D-7 repairs discussed with Powell Equipment. $100.58 credit approved. By-laws 706 and 707 passed on drainage and land sale. subdivision plan for Port Parcel A tentatively approved. Special meeting held to address further matters.
Officials gathered to discuss a proposed new government drainage policy in Manitoba and agreed to record opposition to the policy during the session.
Great Falls Curling Club hosted a weekend bonspiel with 12 rinks. Newcomers and lapsed players mixed on runny ice. A buffet supper followed, with prizes awarded: first event Vern Pichl Richard Thom Clara Wilgosh Betty Bracken. second Jake Rempel Walter Kristofferson Butch Carriere Conrad Caya. third Les Morgan Joan Morgan Larry Metzler Judy Thomas.
Lac du Bonnet village council heard one delegation on March 9. Fire Chief LL Campbell and Deputy Chief R McIntosh recommended buying 700 feet of 24 inch fire hose and a 40.3 cubic foot Scott Cylinder. The meeting approved Pastor E Bowen and Shelley Peterson joining the fire department and passed By law No 121 authorizing an agreement under the Planning Act with Municipal Affairs. Mayor A Campbell presided with Councillors A Atkinson H Dancut M Kabaluk and Secretary Treasurer J W Wade in attendance.
Pine Falls captured the North East ern Shamrock Tom Thumb Hockey Tournament title on Saturday March 6 with five teams. Beausejour defeated Pinawa 3 to 0, Powerview beat St. George 4 to 2, then Pine Falls beat Powerview 4 to 2, and in the final Pine Falls edged Beausejour 3 to 2 with Gordon Watson scoring the winning goal four minutes left. Coach Jim Smith steered a nine eligible player squad despite eligibility issues. Trophy presented to Watson by John Renik of the Shamrock Hotel.
The Seven Sisters under 14 hockey squad beat Gordon Lake 4 to 2 on a trip to the mining town. Doug Reid scored twice with Murray Lawrence and Jim Porth adding singles. Gordon Lawson made key saves as hospitality, snow shoe races, and carnival events accompanied the visit. Coach Bob Morton expressed gratitude to Gordon Lake residents and volunteers who arranged transport and dinner.
A draw at the Pine Falls Recreation Centre during the Canadian Legion Bonspiel awarded a snowmobile as first prize and a sleeping bag as second. Mark Hawrysh of Bissett won the snowmobile and Ben Orvis of Grand Beach won the sleeping bag. the Lac du Bonnet Legion 164 member drew on behalf of Pine Falls Lodge, IC0F 63.
Pinawa Players staged The Bachelor's Baby, a three act comedy, March 11 and 12 in New York City's Robey Building. Directed by Mrs. Helen Tomlinson and Mrs. Jo Kingston, the two hour show drew hearty laughs with 15 cast members delivering strong performances led by Brian Finlay. Behind the scenes contributors were praised, as plans for a variety concert on April 12 take shape.
Parents heard aims and ideals of the educational system from Lac du Bonnet Elementary and High School teachers. The discussion covered beginner to early teen age relationships, with Collegiates presenting guides for youth preparation and a possible new general course. Theatre night success funded scholarships and a UN Seminar sponsorship. Delegates to the convention were named, and Miss Morley will speak at the April meeting.
The Whitemouth 4-H Garden and Potatoe club re organized for the fifth year with twelve members present. New executive includes David White president Rhona Steiner vice president Glen Klapprat secretary Glen Penner treasurer Fern Steiner news reporter and Mrs W J Smith and Mrs D Janzen leaders. A tobogoan party was held on March 6 at the home of F Klsp prat followed by games and lunch. Next business meeting set for March 25 in the Elementary school.
Lac du Bonnet’s Tom Thumbs edged Beausejour in Beausejour Arena to clinch the three game final. Captain Ray Rodzinski opened the scoring with a shot from near the blue line. Ken Cherrey added a goal after a setup by Dick Campbell and Cam Arsenault. The period ended 2–0 with Lac du Bonnet ahead.
The Sev en Sisters 4-H Beef Club held its March meeting at River Hills school and agreed to visit the Manitoba Technical Institute on March 26 with five members and one leader. Glen Schultz read International Bull Sale while John Walls read Not a Cowpony. A Schultz farm tob organ party occurred weekend, with supper by Mrs Walls and Mrs Schultz. A good soaking and a good time were had by all.
The President's Trophy bon spiel drew 16 rinks from Manitoba Hydro in Beausejour on Saturday. Allan Dales and his rink won top honours. Garry Erickson took second. The cup, dating to Manitoba Hydro's Pinawa era ca 1928, honors a provincial curling legacy with a history of river plant supremacy and colorful past curlers.
