Pollucite Ore Shipment From Bernie Lake To Moscow

A record shipment of Pollucite ore, a cesium mineral, left the Tantalum Mine at Bernie Lake destined for Moscow USSR. About 250 metric tons of dry crushed ore traveled by Canadian Pacific in three-container lots via Winnipeg and Quebec City to Rotterdam and then to a Russian vessel for transport to Moscow. The Bern ie Lake deposit is the world's largest known source of pollucite containing over 20 percent cesium.

The Pas Blues Win Fort Alexander Indian Hockey Tournament

The Pas Blues defeated the Braves 12-3 to capture the inaugural Fort Alexander all-Indian hockey tournament prize of 150 dollars and the North American Lumber trophy. Blues beat Winnipeg Tee Pees 8-4 to reach the final, while Braves defeated Sandy Bay 13-3 in their opener. Butch Fluery of The Pas earned MVP and top forward honors, D Garrick of The Pas was top defense, G Mclver of Sandy Bay was best goalie, and D Mclver of Winnipeg won the gentlemanly player award.

Northeastern Manitoba Power Toboggan Races Conclude March 20

Weather disrupted action at Lac du Bonnet with 119 entries from Manitoba and beyond. Saturday eliminations drew about 500 spectators despite slush and water on the ice. Snow halted Sunday events. nine ten lap races totaling five miles remain to be run next Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.

Margaret Fryer Graduates From Winnipeg Nursing Program

Margaret Fryer daughter of Canon and Mrs L C Fryer of Lac du Bonnet graduated with honorable mention from the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing R N program. She was among 126 nurses awarded diplomas in the Centennial Concert Hall Winnipeg and will join the Winnipeg General Hospital staff.

Pinawa Wins First Northeastern Hockey Final Game

In Pinawa Arena Pine Falls rallied to tie 4 4 in the third period but the match was awarded to Pinawa for listing an ineligible player on the game sheet. No overtime was played as per league rules. Continued on page nine.
