John Ernest Engel, 30, died June 2 at Pickle Crow Ontario after a canoe overturned during an outboard motor start. Born in Ladywood he served six years in the PPC L1 and Royal Canadian Signals in World War II. He worked in Beausejour before moving to Pickle Crow. He is survived by his mother Mrs John Clows of Dryden a brother Joseph Matthew Engel of Winnipeg and a sister Mrs Frank Wojcik of Beausejour. Burial was at Pickle Crow Ontario.
Eva Skibo 82 of Hazel Ridge died at her son William Skibo's home on June 12. Widow of Dmytro Skibo, she left four daughters Mrs Harry Belluk Mrs John Koski Mrs John Uskaski and Mrs Peter Sherbon and a son William, plus 29 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Funeral services were June 14 at the Greek Catholic church Cook's Creek with Father Roe officiating. Russells Funeral Home assisted.
Alexander Docyshyn of Stead Manitoba died June 14 at St Boniface Hospital aged 81. He came from Austria 40 years ago and settled in Stead district. Survived by two sons John and William and daughters Mrs Mazur Mrs Alysim and Anne. Funeral June 17 at Greek Catholic church Thalberg with Rev Carmyla officiating. interment in Thalberg churchyard. Russell's funeral home in charge.
Lac du Bonnet council held a June 14 session with Mayor Sparman presiding. By law 6 on signs received third reading and inspector Arthur Rosenberg was appointed at $1 per inspection. multiple payments to local firms and individuals were approved ahead of the next meeting.
The Manitou Lodge at Pine Falls was officially opened by His Honor Lieu tenant Governor R. F. Williams with a white ribbon cut. D W Ambridge of Abitibi Power and Paper Co declared the hotel open for visitors, with M Mc Laggan handing the sciss ors to the Lieutenant Governor. Prominent Manitobans attended, including Hon J S McDiarmid, T E Silver, and Gordon Muligan.
A large crowd tours the J. G. Glassco school model at Pointe du Bois. The 1 in to 8 ft scale replica features a red brick exterior and real gravel roof, destined for display at the Toronto Exhibition with interior photos by Les Barrett.
Beausejour hosted a large Farmers Day with over 3,000 attendees. The event featured farm machinery displays from local dealers and Winnipeg, plus cars, races, contests, and prizes across many categories including oldest attendees, largest family, and various sack and wheelbarrow races.
The schedule lists 1948 league games for Beausejour Lac du Bonnet Pine Falls Hazelridge Tyndall Oakbank and meeting dates. All afternoon games start 2 30 p m CST and evening games 6 30 p m CST.
Beausejour events featured Brad the Happy Clown entertaining children who crowded around him as he handed out more than 50 in toys from the Beausejour Board of Trade. A monster dance closed the day at the town hall and a Shorthorn bull was won by M Foloshyn in the prize draw.
Beausejour plans its largest Dominion Day celebration with motorcycle stunts, a flaming wall crash show, parachute jumps, aeroplane rides, boxing bouts featuring Winnipeg and provincial champs, a parade led by the Winnipeg Grenadiers Band, a Cheerio Troupe performance, Brad the Happy Clown, softball and baseball contests for cash prizes, a gala Town Hall dance, and free parking.
Bernice Mary Szajowski and Stanley Edward Shumilak were married at St Marys Church Beausejour at 5 p m on Saturday June 19 officiated by Father Jaworski. The bride wore white satin with a long veil and bouquet of American Beauty roses. Bridesmaid Clara Kososki best man Allan Mac Lean. A reception followed at St Marys parish hall and the couple honeymooned in Kenora Ontario.
A double ring ceremony conducted on June 17 at 7 p.m. at Harstone Memorial Church united Margaret Rose Brewster and Lorne E. Blue. Miss Irene Lidstone served as bridesmaid and Glenn Guinn as best man. The bride wore a white silk jersey dress with accessories, and a corsage of sweetheart roses and bouvardia.

Lac du Bonnet held its closing exercises in the community hall after a banquet at Lakeview Cafe. The event honored graduates with addresses, awards, and tokens from the Home and School association, with remarks by educators and speakers including Miss Margaret Nix.
The couple wore silk jersey dress with navy accents and a white blue carnation corsage. The groom's mother wore grey gabardine with Talisman roses. A Moore dining room reception for 24 guests featured a peony centered three tier cake. Pine Falls attendees included Mr. and Mrs. D. Brewster, Mr. and Mrs. P. Gardiner, Glenn Guinn, Irene Lidstone, Berna Wail, Frances Walton. The couple will reside in Pine Falls.
John Yurkiew of Tyndall and Katherine Kolta of Birds Hill married at St Michael's Church in Transcona on June 12 with Father Sloboda officiating. The bride wore a white gown with fingertip veil and carnation bouquet. Bridesmaids Ann Ambrose Jessie Uswak Pearl Ambrose wore blue pink and gold. The groom was attended by Michael Yurkiev Michael Kopko and Adam Yaremko. A reception followed at Taras Shevchenko hall Transcona and the couple will reside in Transcona.
Marion Visca became the bride of Frank Robert Ehinger in a Saturday morning ceremony at the Notre Dame rectory in Lac du Bonnet. The bride wore white satin with a halo headpiece and carried pink roses. A large wedding party and a reception in Beausejour followed.
