Barley Contest Ensures Equal Break For All Entrants

The 25 000 National Barley Contest assures fair play as all entries are cleaned by the grain inspection branch before judging. If an entrant uses their own carload for seed, samples come from the farmer’s bin and are likewise prepared before evaluation. Judging focuses on seed suitability and malting use, plus kernel quality and maturity.

Twenty guests gathered May 16 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Iwanick to honor their tenth wedding anniversary. Remembering Alex French Pine Falls Master Mechanic

Alex French 53 of Pine Falls, long noted resident, died May 23 after three months illness from thrombosis complications at the local hospital. Funeral May 25 at Pine Falls United Church. Rev J E Hunter officiated. He leaves widow Bessie Massicotte, son Donald, three sisters and a brother, with widespread community tribute to his skill, kindness, and hobbies in natural history and metal carving.

The Ladies Auxiliary of St. Marys Church Pointe du Bois held a whist drive and sale in the Community Hall raising 176 dollars. Field Day at Lac du Bonnet Success

Six neighbouring schools sent teams to Lac du Bonnet for a day of events. Winners included Pine Falls boys in baseball and Lac du Bonnet in girls baseball and Grade I-VII divisions. The committee thanks all who assisted in making the event a success.

Winnipeg Doctor Earns Edinburgh Fellowship

Word arrived this week that Dr. Harvey C. Fishman of Winnipeg has been named a Fellow in the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. He graduated from Manitoba Medical College in 1937, practised at Beausejour, then pursued post graduate work in Edinburgh for a year and studied for the Fellowship. He later completed further studies in Chicago.

Manitoba cuts second block hydro rate for businesses

The province lowers the second block commercial energy rate to 3 cents per kilowatt hour for May. More than 200 towns and hamlets gain from the reduction, which follows a prior cut in Brandon and Portage la Prairie. April kilowatt hours rose 31.29 percent year over year.

Fred Legall Recalls England After Three Month Visit

Fred Legall just returned from a three month stay in England visiting his parents and relatives. He sailed aboard the Marine Flasher and was delayed a week in New York before departure. His parents Mr and Mrs G Legall of London welcomed him home as their city lies in ruins from the war. Legall describes postwar shortages with a one week ration for one person including butter lard margarine cheese and sugar and a single egg per week. Black bread is the staple and cigarettes cost 83 cents for twenty, with meat scarce.

Local couple wed as crowd hails new life in Tyndall
