British Industries Fair Opens With Babel Interpreters

The British Industries Fair opened on May 5 with 14 interpreters ready to translate 26 languages for Operation Babel at Castle Bromwich Birmingham. Interpreters are available at Birmingham and London stations and inside the fair, with Birmingham staff covering Norwegian to Esperanto among others.

United Kingdom Ship Yards Maintain World Lead

British and Irish yards now build over 2,000,000 tons of merchant vessels per Lloyds Register of Shipping, the highest since March 1922, about 543 percent of the world total excluding a list of nations. The United States drops to third with about 215,000 tons while Sweden and France lead foreign yards with roughly 244,000 and 233,000 tons respectively.

Vioth circus at London fair shows grubs eating cloth

In the Textile section at Earls Court, the British Industries Fair opens May 5 and features live grubs that consume unprocessed cloth while ignoring cloth treated by a special process. An amplifier lets visitors hear the grubs at work. The quote from Hume about temper contrasts with the exhibit's curious display.

Rattai House and Barn Destroyed by Fire Near Beausejour

A fire at Edward Rattai’s farm, 1e miles west of Beausejour, destroyed the house and barn in the early hours of Sunday May 12. Mr and Mrs Rattai and their three children escaped unharmed as volunteers fought the blaze under Chief A Greenberg and N Rumak. Local residents aided and RCMP helped escort the victims to Beausejour.

A Life magazine highlighted eight scoop Moron's Ecstasy Mammoth ice cream sundae appears in Pine Falls. A teen girl attempted to eat the colossal dish as a wager but melted sundae defeated her. Several boys finished the remaining mix while she watched.

Elmer Crozier of Lac du Bonnet showed off a tractor that can perform two complete somersaults. While testing on a Little Rock hillside, the front wheel fell into a hole, the tractor rolled over twice, then righted itself and kept going as if nothing happened.

Mrs. F. Harrison won second prize a bottle of her favourite hand lotion. The ladies of the organization served a bountiful lunch with fruit salad and cakes, remarking the tasty offerings could not be called a mere lunch class.

Fire Destroys Elma Home

The home of M. Kulbaba in Elma was gutted by fire on Sunday May 18 at 8 am while he fed cattle in the barn. Neighbors V Wasiuta and J Melnychenko helped save some furniture. The couple, insured, are currently staying with Mrs Kulbaba's parents Mr and Mrs D rachimec.

Legion Ladies Bingo Wind-Up Party at Pine Falls

The Ladies' Auxiliary of Pine Falls Canad ian Legion held a Wind-up Party in United Church club rooms with about sixty guests. Bingo provided thrills with Mrs Jack Jaques winning three prizes and Mrs E Manson taking the first prize in the evening draw. The white elephant sale yielded attractive contents for each package.

Car rolls after tire blows out near Seddon’s Corner

An accident four miles east of Seddon’s Corner Friday evening May 23 involved F. Brown of Winnipeg driving a 1937 Oldsmobile Sedan. A tire blew out causing the car to roll several times. Passenger George H. Smith of Winnipeg was injured and transported to hospital by Dr. J. Brook. The driver Wm. Wilson and passenger C. Nixon were uninjured. the car sustained extensive damage.

Bride and groom wed with family visit in Manitoba town

The bride served as flower girl in white with the groom accompanied by his brother Johnny Schatkowsky and cousin Willie Lange at the Municipal Hall reception. Local orchestra played as relatives from Morden and Gladstone visited the bride’s parents. The couple plan to settle in the Whitemouth district.

A large group of Crescent Bay residents raised 145.05 at a Saturday gathering to help Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bruneau rebuild after a two week old fire. War bride Mrs Bruneau thanked Canadians for the generosity and Fred Sellers was commended for leading the drive.

Whitemouth Council Debates Consolidated School Build

The municipal council met on Tuesday May 13 led by Reeve Ed Henderson with full attendance. They discussed the Whitemouth Consolidated School project and the heavy debt to the School Board delaying construction, while ratepayers urge timely payment so the school can be built this year. The school plans a Field Day early next month with the date to be announced.
