Outside Canada rates are $4.00 for one year and $6.00 for two years. Allow one week for arrival and notify if no arrival.
The Bill MacDonald foursome of Pine Falls won the eighth annual novelty bonspiel at the Great Falls Curling Club, beating 11 rinks. Dugard of Pine Falls and Lawson of Seven Sisters were runners-up. Bill Smith of Lac du Bonnet won the second event with Sutherland of Great Falls and King of Seven Sisters as runners-up. Ray Foubert of Lac du Bonnet led the third event, with Boyer and Erickson teams from Great Falls taking second and third. The event featured meals served by club volunteers Thelma Bernard, Katie Kristofferson, Clara Bracken, Ginny Clark, and Gladys Janssen, a Saturday night dance with Paul Ryplanski’s orchestra, and strong crowds countering a praising note for its quality among the club’s annual curling fixtures.
The 1965 meeting in Pine Falls focused on planning the annual St Valentine Tea and Bazaar to be held February 6 in the Parish Hall from 2 to 5 p.m. The group also noted a shift of the Guild meetings to the second Tuesday each month.
About 13,000 volunteers across Manitoba will join the March of Dimes Mothers March on February 1 to boost the 1965 campaign. Many participants will wear a Tonight I am a Mother tag. Funds support rehabilitation services for 2,800 disabled clients, including wheelchairs and hearing aids.
Pinawa opens Saturday morning art classes starting January 30 led by A L Heureux a University of Manchester graduate visiting from Winnipeg. Classes run 10 to noon at Pinawa School on alternating Saturdays. Residents of Pinawa and nearby areas are invited to join. for details call Mrs Tegart 753 2765 or Mrs McKeown 753 2757.
On June 8 1906 full voltage testing occurred and Winnipeg received its first electric energy the next day with a peak load of 1000 KW. Pinawa stopped supplying Winnipeg on September 26 1951 at 17 58 with Unit 9 last to deliver power. residents aim to preserve the link by mounting the tachometer in a public Pinawa building.
Dr D M Stephens presented Pinawa with a brass tachometer relic from the old Winnipeg River hydro station. It logged 200 RPM on Generator No 1 and first ran on March 21 1906, marking Manitoba Hydro’s early power delivery to Winnipeg. The instrument honors K C Fergusson who led Pinawa’s hydro era and attended the briefing.
Mrs. Alice Puddicombe Lac du Bonnet and Alex Shewchuk Whitemouth joined about 85 teachers from across Manitoba at a Manitoba Teachers Society seminar in Winnipeg on January 23. It explored Michener Commission education recommendations and featured leaders from urban and school trustees organizations. Rene Prefontaine urged transferring school fiscal responsibility to division boards to enable larger units and hiring competent superintendents.
Steve Kachur of Elma faced a troubling incident when a bear appeared at his window while he worked at home. He struck the bear with an axe, killing it, in what he said was an attempt to protect himself during the encounter.
St John s Anglican Parish in Lac Du Bonnet held a Sunday potluck after which the annual meeting reviewed 1964, presented the 1965 budget by A King and named the vestry for the year. W Hardy chaired the nominating committee presenting rector s and people s wardens and ten vestry members.
Art Merke is re elected as River Hills Lutheran St Paul Church trustee for a three year term at the annual meeting held January 20 with 46 members present. Harold Pommer is deacon for three years, Charlie Hill secretary for one year, Jack Howcroft treasurer for one year. Pastor A Eppler reports baptized 271 confirmed 190 communicants 150 and financials in good standing. Discussion centers on planning a new church building with cost estimates. Lunch served by church ladies.
The Lac du Bonnet men's club hosts the 20th north eastern bonspiel starting Thursday January 28 at 7 00 p m with finals Sunday January 31 at 5 30 p m An entry of 32 rinks from northeast Manitoba clubs includes Pine Falls Pinawa Seven Sisters Great Falls Whitemouth Pointe du Bois Beausejour Victoria Beach Bissett Gordon Lake and 15 from Lac du Bonnet Prizes include Springfield Leader Beaver Lumber and Lakeview Hotel Trophies Friday smoker at Memorial Hall features food and curling L C Cherrey is drawmaster Previous Springfield Leader Trophy winners listed from 1946 to 1965.
William Zabolotny was reelected president of the Lac du Bonnet Lakers Ski Club at the annual meeting held Monday January 25 at 8 p.m. in the Elementary school basement with 28 members present. Irvin Grabke nominated chairman for the officer election. The slate included Vic David Past President Shelley Peterson Vice President Audrey Weiss Secretary Treasurer Ethel David Bingo Chairman Fran Augustine Concession Chairman Irvin Grabke MWSA Representative Jerry DeMunych Equipment Manager Audrey Wood Senior Executive Bud Osis Ken Dawson J Veats N Weiss Junior Executive Tony Augustine C Waters G Grabke. After business, members adjourned for coffee.
Whit emouth Rural Municipality held its inaugural meeting on Tuesday January 19 in the council chambers. Reeve Edward Henderson named a committee including Adolph Malkoski deputy reeve and finance, councillors Wm Sudletsky Wm Kurian and George Berrick secretary treasurer Wm Meyers. Weselak and Middleton were appointed solicitors for the coming year as the municipality reports good standing with several large government grants.
Lac du Bonnet hosted Pointe du Bois in the season opener on January 16. Scorers included Curtis Dancy and Garth Hodge with assists from John Marion and Ronny Griffith. Lac du Bonnet edged Pointe du Bois 3 1 as the goalie R Nesper faced pressure and Donny Cherry and Dancy added on breakaways.
Lac du Bonnet District Court was held Tuesday with magistrate H Gyles presiding and Crown Attorney W Riley in attendance. Ten juvenile cases heard. several remanded to dates in March and January for rape illegal liquor possession robbery break enter theft and related charges. Three juveniles charged with liquor under age. one forgery. Sentences included Andrew Bird one day in jail for intoxication. Peter Sanderson two years for theft over $50. Carl Dignard fined $20 for illegal liquor possession. Roger Morrissette fined $25 for liquor possession while under age. Peter Petrowich fined $10 for unsafe driving. Wilfred Sanderson noted.
View was fined 820.00 and costs for illegal possession of liquor. Sam Pruden Edward Thomas Theodore McPherson and Morris McCorrister, all of Hodgson, were each fined 10.00 and costs for illicit possession of liquor. John Betty of Pine Falls was fined 75.00 and costs for impaired driving and also fined 20.00 and costs for illegal possession of liquor. Eugene Guimond of Fort Alexander was fined 150.00 and costs on a charge of common assault. Henry Courchene of Fort Alexander was found guilty on a charge of impaired driving and remanded to January 26. Louis Bruyere of Fort Alexander was sentenced to one month in jail on a charge of obstructing a peace officer. The following cases were remanded to January 26: Walter Starr, Cecil Starr, Harry Swampy, Pearl Morrissette, Walter Paquette, Louis Bruneau, Morris Kettles, Harold Mann, Robert Starr and Sidney Courchene. Preliminary Hearing January 15, Fred Kemplien of Lac du Bonnet was acquitted of rape and placed on a two year suspended sentence on a charge of assault causing bodily harm. William Clarke of no fixed address was charged with possession of stolen property and remanded to Provincial Police Court Winnipeg for Monday, January 18th.
