The Great Falls Women’s Institute held its annual meeting on January 16 at the Curling Rink club rooms with about half the membership present to elect a new slate. Retiring president Mrs. Joan Morgan reviewed the year’s work including sponsoring Boy Scouts and Christmas parcel drives, supplying meals for the first annual Boy Scout father and son banquet, canvassing for the Blood Donor Clinic, and collecting used Christmas cards for the Children's Hospital. New officers include Olga Mendella as president and Mrs. Joan Morgan as first vice president, with Marie Melnick, Anna Sutherland, and others filling key posts. auditor Mrs. Helen Ortwein and district board nominee Mrs. Pearl Warren were also elected. Mrs. Morgan thanked members and urged continued effort toward the institute’s goal of betterment of home and country.

Dr R F S Robertson head of the research and development branch at Whiteshell outlines Manitoba’s part in nuclear power development. He notes current reactors cost like coal or oil plants and the closing gap between hydro and nuclear power. Ontario operates a 200000 hp reactor with two more planned at 500000 hp. He envisions small portable N plants for northern points.

Lac Du Bonnet Fire Destroys Lesko Home
The Lac du Bonnet residence of J. Lesko was destroyed by a Tuesday morning fire at 10:15 a.m. Neighbours noticed the blaze at 10:05 a.m. and high winds fed the flames causing walls to cave in within minutes. Insurance status was not known at press time.

Minnie McDonald of Pine Falls won the District 1 Diamond D playdowns in Lac du Bonnet on Tuesday January 19 defeating the Dugald rink 12-11 and 11-7 to advance to the Zone A Championship. Her rink included Rae Webb Denny Brown and Fran Jarowski.

Mrs Helen Vincent of Elmwood led her rink to victory in the 17th annual Hudson Bay Trophy event at Lac du Bonnet. The Elmwood team defeated L Mc Luckie and crew to claim the top prize as 18 rinks competed January 15 to 17. Doreen Thompson of Pinawa claimed the Dancyt and Son Trophy in a tight finish over Mariam Frayne of Pine Falls. Rae Webb of Pine Falls won the Goodway Trophy defeating Martha Molinski of Whitemouth and their rink. A Saturday night meal and skit by Lac du Bonnet ladies capped the event.

The Pinawa Fire Department earned top prize in Manitoba class F and an honorable mention in Canadian municipal class B in an international fire prevention program competition. St James, Brandon, East Kildonan, Portage, Flin Flon, and Rivers also placed in various divisions. Awards are given by the National Fire Protection Association with Canadian partners.

The Lac du Bonnet Home and School Association met Tuesday January 12 with Mrs H Smith presiding. Reports to the Consolidated School District No 2394 Board covered a public request for a new elementary school and funding steps. A moment of silence honored Mary Nanstrom, a long time worker and member. A committee offered to push a town library addition while Pine Falls youth Graham Randall spoke on a United Nations Youth Pilgrimage. A snow removal request to the Village Council was planned, and a Theatre Night and UNICEF drive updates were noted.

Lac du Bonnet's Golden Hawks improved to unbeaten in four starts with a 5-4 victory over Pine Falls. Norm Cherrey opened scoring, Cherrey hat trick, and Dancyt added a solo rush goal to reach a 5-2 lead before Pine Falls answered. Pine Falls later closed to 5-4, but the Hawks held on for the win.
