Agricultural Council Formed In North-Eastern Manitoba
The North eastern Manitoba Agricultural Council was formed on Monday February 27 in Beausejour to address farm problems. Mr H H Austman outlined aims to ensure farmers benefit from research and act in advisory capacity. Elections chose Alf Modjeski chairman Arthur A Trapp vice chairman and F Slevinski secretary treasurer. A surprise farewell social at Notre Dame du Laus Hall Powerview honored Mr and Mrs H J Parent who depart Feb 21 for Toronto after a Winnipeg visit. Rev Father Messier and E D Kemball spoke for church and Leonard School Board as about 200 guests gave best wishes and travel suitcases and carnations were presented.

Pine Falls Ladies Bonspiel Won By Winnipeg Rink
The Pine Falls Ladies Curling Club hosted its 7th annual bonspiel on Feb 21 22 with 19 visiting rinks from Winnipeg Elmwood St Vital Charleswood Pointe du Bois Lac du Bonnet Great Falls and Bissett and 13 local rinks. Mrs Dorothy Johnson and her rink undefeated advanced to meet Mrs Storey’s Winnipeg rink which won 10 8 in ten ends. The event featured a five ender by Johnson’s rink with decisive shots in the 8th end. Wardrop Lac du Bonnet took third prize. Martell Elmwood fourth. Second event Cambridge Dairies trophy went to Dales Great Falls. Wilson Pointe du Bois second. Frayne Pine Falls third. Buchanan Charleswood fourth. Third event winners were Zikman Lac du Bonnet first. Thompson St Vital second. Morrison Granite third. Bachynski Winter Club Winnipeg fourth. Fourth event winners Tiebert Charleswood first. A Mitchell Pembina Winnipeg second. Heaton Elmwood third. Hendrickson Bissett fourth. Prizes presented by president Wanda Fredericks who thanked participants and invited next year’s bonspiel.

Inglis Farmer Takes 1955 Barley Award
Joe Zimmer of Inglis won the 1955 Manitoba barley championship in the National Barley Contest, earning $200 plus $100 for regional first place. Alberta swept the top interprovincial prizes, with Marry Brooks and Stainer Valli taking $500 and $300. Manitoba regional and provincial winners are listed with multiple growers from Inglis and nearby towns. a special $50 award went to S Marynick for handling Zimmer’s entry.

River Pioneer Mrs Kronberg Dies in Gilbert Plains Visit
Alma Helena Bersziems Kronberg a Manitoba pioneer born in Latvia in 1834, immigrated to Winnipeg in 1909, homesteaded at Poplar Bay and later settled in Lac du Bonnet, Finavra, and finally Gilbert Plains district. She traveled to visit her daughter and died February 19 at Gilbert Plains hospital.

Funeral services were held for Mrs A St Pierre at St George Church on February 11 led by Rev Father Messier. Knights of Columbus hosted an annual social at St Theresa Hall with a February 20 Legion Hall banquet. A funeral took Mr A Paienent in Sturgeon Falls Ontario and Mr G Hal Penny died near Minnesota on the way to Pine Falls bonspiel. Speedy recovery wishes to N Holick. A Leonard School concert honored Father’s Feast Day February 24 at Notre Dame au Laus Hall. A Valentine social at Recreation Hall featured a cake from Mesdames Ross and Frayne. Pee Wees and Juveniles hockey and a social day trip to Paper Mill and Hydro Plant. St Patrick’s Silver Tea and bazaar set for March 17 at the Chateau 3 to 6 PM.

The Pine Falls Men's 8th Papertown Bonspiel ran February 17 to 19 with multiple rinks competing. H Brown of Transcona captured the Hayes trophy, Doug Bond skipped. K and S Equipment Garage Damaged By Fire
Fire last Tuesday February 21 damaged the K and S Equipment Garage and living quarters above after a leaking gas tank on a truck burst into flames. The blaze ate the north wall and ceiling. one suite room was gutted while the upstairs suffered smoke and water damage. Firefighters from the local truck and a forestry pump fought the blaze for about two and a half hours, bringing it under control. Building and contents were partially insured. Residents helped move equipment to a nearby building.
