Canada Pension Plan dominates Senate hearings
The Ottawa report notes the Liberal and Progressive Conservative turmoil as the Senate Commons Committee on the Canada Pension Plan examines a $600 million yearly tax rise and a shift toward social insurance modeled on U.S. plans. It analyzes political will, regional hurdles with Quebec, and the risk of delaying the plan while highlighting the opposition to short term gains for the young and the elderly underserved. The Liberals bend toward a repair plan for retirees, while Ontario props a merged pension approach to guarantee at least $100 monthly for all retirees, complicating funding via existing rates.

New Manitoba Saskatoon sessions draw political spotlight
The Saskatoon Liberal government under Ross Thatcher faces a pivotal first session with a strong majority, while Manitoba's Roblin government also holds a solid base as both legislatures prepare lengthy sessions. Ottawa’s cabinet questions and Pearson’s fragile minority add to the tense political climate as issues such as education funding and land expropriation loom. Churchill Fellowships praised as universal, and a Hartney weekly highlights local press value in rural life.
