Judy Dunwoody Wins Carnival Queen Title at Pointe Carnival
Judy Dunwoody of Pointe du Bois won the Carnival Queen honour at the Sports Carnival held on Saturday February 6. Nine contestants competed with Bernadette Kulczycki Darlene Lodge and Marlene Frejek as runners up. The event featured broomball and hockey games, a Pee Wees match, a broom ball contest, and a large casino style dance to close the evening.

Three Die In Lac du Bonnet Bakery Fire
A weekend blaze in Lac du Bonnet’s bakery and nearby stores killed three people and injured others. The explosion from a furnace ignited the building, trapping owner Mike Baldes and his 2 year old son on the second floor, while Veronica Baldes perished at the front door. Firefighters from multiple units battled fierce winds to contain the flames and save remaining structures and residents.

Lac du Bonnet School Council Plans Canteen Pay and Events
The student council met on Wednesday February 17 with ten members. President Chris Freund led the meeting as treasurer John Melnick reported about 400 dollars on hand. They approved paying disc jockeys one dollar per night for supervision and decided to hold canteens every other week. A magazine campaign in April was postponed. The 1964-5 yearbook committee exceeded its 400 dollar advertising goal under Sandra Taylor, bringing a hard cover yearbook closer to reality. The hockey team traveled to Power View and lost 9-0. the final game is February 24 at Beausejour. Curling resumes with a February 27 bonspiel featuring twelve rinks. League curling standings have Freund leading with 5-2, Buhay 5-3, Swain 4-4. A canteen with snack bar is planned for February 26 at 8:00 p.m.

Funeral for Fire Victims Wednesday in Winnipeg
Funeral services for the three victims of the Lac du Bonnet fire will be held Wednesday February 24 at St Joseph Roman Catholic Church Winnipeg. Requiem Mass at 10:00 a.m. with Rev Father O Pauwels officiating. Interment in Holy Ghost Cemetery. Deceased Michael Baldes and his children Veronica and Michael Junior leave to mourn wife Annelise son Roland and brother Joseph. Maternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Max Biebsch also survive. Baldes born in Semlin Yugoslavia later moved to Austria then Canada where he has lived ten years. The two children were born in Winnipeg.
