Baby Dies in Rennie Flash Fire Tragedy

A nine month old baby died and father severely burned when a fire swept the four room Rennie Manitoba dwelling on February 5. Mrs Lottie McKenzie and her two sons escaped with minor injuries as Mr McKenzie died ten days after at Winnipeg General Hospital. Community donations topped $170 from Rennie and neighboring towns to aid the victims.

Funeral for Edward J. Hawkes at St Marys Pointe du Bois

Edward J. Hawkes died February 8 at age 61 and was buried at Lac du Bonnet. The funeral service occurred February 10 at St Marys Anglican Church Pointe du Bois with Mordue Brothers Funeral Home in charge. He was born in Luton England and lived in Canada since 1912. He is survived by his widow Elizabeth four sons Edward Val Frederick and Arthur in Calgary with the armed forces. siblings and grandchildren.

Funeral service for Mrs. Mary Magura held in Beausejour

Funeral service was held for the late Mrs. Mary Magura on Feb. 5 at 11 am at St. Marys Roman Catholic church with Rev. Gurka officiating. Interment followed at St. Marys cemetery. She died Feb. 2 at St. Boniface hospital in her 71st year. Survived by four sons Walter Beausejour Mike of Lapton Steve and Peter of Lorain Ohio two daughters Mrs Mike Turko Winnipeg and Mrs Annie Rachal Hazelgrove. Born in Poland in 1876 she came to Canada in 1899 settling in Cook's Creek district with husband John who died 22 years ago. She had lived in Beausejour for three years with son Walter. Russell funeral home, Beausejour, in charge.

Death of Olaf Anderson at Great Falls

Olaf Anderson of Broadlands died at his daughter's home in Great Falls on February 7 at age 88. A Sweden native who moved to Canada 43 years ago, he lived first in Winnipeg before settling in the district. Survived by five sons, three daughters, 32 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren, with services conducted by Rev. S Richardson. Burial in Riverland cemetery with pallbearers Frank, Gus, Carl, George, Nels and Roy Carlson.

Legion branch elects Alf Hallick president for year

No. 164 branch Canadian Legion held a postponed officers meeting in the Legion hall on Thursday evening. Alf Hallick was elected president for the ensuing year with Omer Levasseur and M. F. Brown as first and second vice presidents. Hubert Arsenault was unanimously re elected sergeant at arms and W. S. Kennard becomes secretary treasurer, succeeding E. Rousseau. The auxiliary ladies and guests joined a lively party with piano and vocalists, and plans for more gatherings were discussed.

Latvian D P Arrives in Lac du Bonnet After Turbulent Flight

Andrejs Ceplis and wife Anna from Latvia settled in Lac du Bonnet after a forced landing at Dorval airport when a trans Atlantic plane lost an engine four minutes from arrival. The couple, aided by their 20 year old son employed at San Antonio mines, plan new livelihoods in Canada with Andrejs joining Lac du Bonnet bakery and Anna pursuing cosmetology. The tale ends with warm local welcome and hope to forget past hardships.
