Fire destroys Lac du Bonnet residence

The P. H. Klassen home in Lac du Bonnet burned on Sunday, Jan. 31, leaving only the shell. Fire started in the kitchen ceiling and spread quickly, four thousand gallons of water failing to save much. Klassen and others soaked the basement to salvage preserves and laundry. The house, owned by Mrs. Lil Carrion of Winnipeg, was insured along with the furniture. Mr. Klassen and his five children are being cared for by local villagers.

Pine Falls Hospital to Receive New Items

Pine Falls Hospital Auxiliary held a regular meeting in the Chat room to discuss procurement of new items for hospital use. Members reviewed needs and planned potential purchases and fundraising efforts.

Beausejour H. S. A. Opens 1954 with Music Movies

Beausejour Home and School Association commenced its 1954 season with an evening program of musical selections and Australia life movies. An appreciative audience attended and a delicious lunch was served. The committee plans more interesting winter events.

Glenfields weekend guests and local notes

Sunday guests of Mr and Mrs R Nikodem were Mr and Mrs Eugene Buhay and son Allan of Winnipeg. Weekend campers included Alfred Berkowski Adolf Molinski Art Feibelkorn Henry Kowalkie Gus and Willie Fiebelkorn and Herbie Berkowski. Henry Schmidtke had misfortune on the road and did not get home. Mrs J Petrush of Winnipeg visited her mother Mrs A Woloshyn and then with her daughter and son in law Mr and Mrs J Zakimows. The Nikodem party attended Mrs A Steinrich funeral in Steinbach. Herbie Berkowski and John Mickoloff return to Winnipeg to resume studies. Weekenders from Winnipeg were Pete Woloshyn Helen Rogoski and Ernest Nikodem. Manual Henry and Eddie Berkowski finished pulp cutting for Dan Swark south of Libay and will start swamping. Mrs Julian Trojanoski and son Steven Bruce join her husband at the Pinawa Camp for the winter. Paul Zdrill and sons and Gus Hawaty of Transcona visited the district Sunday. D Thompson, visiting R W Belton, smashed his little finger in a car door. Doug has taken over as section foreman at Helston leaving Stead. He will be missed by friends in Glenfields. Mrs J B Sitar of Elma is spending a week with Mr and Mrs Wm Golembioski.

Pine Falls club welcomes three new members on fifth birthday

The Pine Falls Quarter Century Club added Jack Miller Norman Walton and Bill Spence as new members on the group fifth birthday Eleven members now belong with twenty five total. Best wishes go to Jim Lyons who retired from Manitoba Paper Co on December 31 last year and already started a new job as First Aid Attendant to the Paper Kings. A shower for Miss Nellie Souka at the Chateau marked her February 6 wedding with many gifts and Nellie a Hudson Bay sales clerk for six years.

Community Auxiliary Meeting Plans Cookie Sale and Supplies

At Eau meeting on January 26 plans were made to buy towels hospital gown material pillow cases crib sheets and spreads and two plastic mattress covers. Cookies orders to be placed before February 1 with delivery February 5. Mrs W C Harrison and Mrs F Ford in charge. Refreshments served. Next meeting March 1. all members and prospective members urged to attend.

Garson Hockey Swifts Past Tierney Birds Hill

Garson and Bird's Hill met in a brisk hockey match with Garson winning 1 to 0. A separate broom ball game saw Garson defeat Tyndall 1 to 0. Garson High routed Tyndall 2 to 0 while East Selkirk edged Garson 4 to 3. Mrs. Mike Wasney marked her 42nd Burns Day birthday with friends.

Stewards Appointed for Pine Falls United Church

At the annual congregational meeting held in the church basement on Thursday January 28 Pine Falls United Church named stewards for the new chancel including Dr K J Johnson James Roy George Manson and others Plans to replace the obsolete heating unit with a new oil system were discussed A canvass of the town will be conducted Reports from Christian Educational groups show heavy membership and space concerns Mrs Brock Bartlett became president of the Woman's Association and Mrs Q Rodgers assumed leadership of the Women's Missionary Society.

A party at Peter Hnatuik’s home sponsored by Yasna Zoria raises funds for the Greek Orthodox church. Manitoba Hospital Service Association held a public meeting at Tyndall school led by B. E. Lews. North Tyndall beat South 6 0 in broomball as a preview of a rematch. Greenwich district and School District No. 568 elected trustees and reorganized the guard. Garson defeated Tyndall broomball 1 0 at Garson ice. The Greenwich Ratepayers met with board members named M Henko J Mastaller K Chorney and P Litokwich and Brewery Products contributed one hundred dollars.

New Officers Installed in L D B Legion Auxiliary

The L D B Legion Auxiliary annual meeting elected 1954 officers led by President Mrs M Nasstrom and Immediate Past President Mrs K Rousseau. The 1953 year showed strong fundraising from card parties dances and a pancake supper with donations to Deer Lodge magazine fund the legion Christmas tree European flood relief cenotaph fund and March of Dimes.

St George Defeats Lac du Bonnet 9-0 in Hockey Match

On Sunday January 24 St George Bantams defeated Lac du Bonnet Bantams 9 to 0 at Lac du Bonnet. St George dominated with strong skating and stick handling led by Hirst Danglechuk Lapierre and Kiziak. The local team scored early and added a third period goal off a deflection by Eugene Dangchuk as penalties mounted against Lac du Bonnet.

Square Dancers Meet at Lac du Bonnet

On Saturday January 30 square dance clubs from Lac du Bonnet and nearby districts including Winnipeg gathered at Lac Memorial hall. The event began at 2 30 pm with a workshop directed by George Senyk of Winnipeg and assisted by local members. Evening activities featured MC Frank Hanton and three hours of square and couple dancing with calls by visiting callers. Out of town guests came from Winnipeg Whitemouth Pine Falls and Great Falls. A lunch served by Lac du Bonnet club members closed the enjoyable day.

Beausejour residents recall a pleasant weekend as son Ken neth and daughter-in-law Lillian visited over Saturday and Sunday. Ken's shift work recently kept them from traveling east, but they look well and happy in married life.
