Beausejour Lions prepare for the Karnival Ice Shows with three contestants for Karnival Kween. Miss Thea Reimer sponsored by the Jaycees, Miss Lois Puffer sponsored by the U.S.A.F., and Miss Lilian Beley, the Collegiate entrant, are announced as finalists for the two day event set to unfold within weeks.
Beausejour crushed Pine Falls 9 to 3 in game one of a two game total point Provincial Play downs series. Beausejour scorers were R. Uhi five goals, D. Manych three, S. Schewe one. Pine Falls goals came from T. Souka R. Bowman and others. Weak Pine Falls net minding noted.
The Reverend H Moertelmier of Beausejour Lutheran church accepts a call to lead the Lutheran church at Ellerslie Alberta starting March 1. Farewell events are planned across Beausejour Green Bay Golden Bay and district with gifts given to the minister and his wife.
The Bird's Hill Recreation Club staged annual Amateur Night in the Community Hall on Friday January 29. Master of Ceremonies was Mr. DeVissier. Mrs. Philip Rebeck led the refreshment committee with hot dogs and coffee. An impromptu dance followed lunch as outside talent performed including Francis Waugh violin and Dorothy Langton, Garry Rebeck accordion, Harry MacBeth vocals, Rev. J. H. Shemilt readings, and many groups and solo acts led or accompanied by Langton, MacLachlan, Tait, Wasney, Ryan, and others.
The Whitemouth Hospital Guild sponsored a dance at Municipal Hall on Saturday January 30 raising 72.92 for Cancer Research and March of Dimes. The Ladies thank the Oak Bank orchestra for their kindness and help to make the evening a success.
The eighth annual North Eastern Manitoba bonspiel at Lac du Bonnet Feb 5-6 drew 18 rinks from 10 clubs. Pine Falls claimed the Springfield Leader Stand Challenge trophy with D D Monro skip as they defeated Homer Thomson’s Pine Falls rink. W Zikman of Lac du Bonnet won the Winnipeg electric award over K R McCuaig of Bissett.
The Lac du Bonnet St. John’s Anglican W A held its regular monthly meeting on February 1 in the parish hall with friendship as the devotional focus. Readings on friendship were given, and Mrs Ruth Crook led singing of All the Way My Saviour Leads Me to close. Rev Maxwell announced confirm ation classes to begin February 15 and a choir meeting after February 14 evening service. The business portion set committees for the 1954 Fall Bazaar. World Day of Prayer will be observed in the church on Friday in March. Lunch followed hosted by Mrs E Mc Leod, Mrs A Brown and Miss N Ambrose.
George E. Butler, supervisor at Sport Fishing and Fish Culture, spoke to the Lac du Bonnet Board of Trade on February 2 proposing a biological survey to assess a possible hatchery. He cited past fish plantings, discussed eggs survival, and noted a river poisoning incident to clear space for rainbow trout stocking.
Farmers from Beausejour and nearby districts met at Beausejour Town Hall to hear Manitoba Wheat Pool officers discuss a pool elevator for the district. D W Richmond and D Wilton spoke on grain marketing and pool issues, praising the turnout and urging continued momentum. A provisional board was elected with Matt Laneway as chairman and S Kowalchuk as secretary. meetings to organize for the elevator fund aim to raise 20000 dollars, with future meetings in Ladywood Green Bay Lydiatt and Tyndall. A barn fire at Frank Friesen’s farm destroyed a tractor, horses, seven cattle and a hog, with no insurance.
Optimism marked the Pine Falls United Church annual meeting held January 2. The stewards reported a smaller bank balance of 564.53 due to higher expenditures including repairs a pulpit chair and subscriptions to the United Church Observer. The Woman's Association noted a good year with new carpet in the manse fern stands and donations to social services and the Training School fund. Cash balance 870.49. Missionary and Maintenance fund received 580 with funds available for 1954. Woman's Missionary Losses exceeded target with 175. The session reported ten new members and good communion attendance. Youth groups and Sunday school showed strong enrolment and 90 average attendance. A new film slide projector was used and teachers listed. Congregation voted to publish a complete financial report in January 1955.
The Lac du Bonnet Notre Dame Parish Catholic Women Society elected officers under Chaplain Rev. Ulric El O F M. Laverdiere is president with G Brincheski as vice president Gobeil as treasurer Olga Campbell as recording secretary. Past officers thanked. two more card parties planned culminating in a card party and bazaar to mark fifty years of Notre Dame Church building.
The annual Whitemouth Anglican W A meeting was held February 3 at Mrs. Charlie Hunt's home. Mrs. Richard Jorgenson was reelected president with Mrs. Wm Aitken as vice president and Mrs. Jim Thomson as secretary. Other officers include Mrs. Hunt flower fund Mrs. Kirby bank offering Mrs. Stavenford dorcas sec Mrs. Smart prayer partner and Mrs. Connor Bible reading. Meetings are set for the first Wednesday each month and a spring roof repair is planned.
Lac du Bonnet skated to a 7 0 win at Pointe du Bois on Wednesday February 3 as Arnold and Ronald Hirst scored all seven goals for Lac au Bonnet with assists from Johnnie Lapierre and each other. Arnold drew the only penalty in a game highlighting twin scoring synergy. The prairie region context notes Canada’s vast plain from Gulf of Mexico to Arctic.

Garson high school loses 5 1 to Seven Sisters jockey team. Gary Waters marks his hid birthday with three young friends on January 28.
Mr and Mrs O Bjornson visited the city last week staying at the home of Mr Bjornson's mother who is described as quite ill.
