Eight year old drowns saving companion at falls

An eight year old Winnipeg boy Barry Edward Blonski drowned Sunday night at Whitemouth Falls near Seven Sisters Manitoba while trying to hand a fishing pole to a companion who had fallen in. He slipped into the river and disappeared. his body was recovered later. The companion reached shore safely. Seven Sisters Falls lies about 50 miles northeast of Winnipeg.

Former Whitemouth Teacher Wins Education Scholarship

J. Orville Hood, who began teaching in Whitemouth in 1959 and later served at Dieppe School in Charleswood, has been awarded one of two $500 Manitoba Teachers' Society undergraduate scholarships. Hood will study history English geography and sociology at the University of Manitoba starting in September. The society also awarded Verna Maksimov a $500 undergraduate scholarship and other grants to Dave Downie William L. Davis and J Wayne Watt. The presentations occur this fall.

Highway Safety Council estimates 6 million cars on Labour Day

The Canadian Highway Safety Council forecasts six million autos on Canadian roads over the Labour Day weekend, more than half of cars built since 1904. With 500,000 miles of roads, that equals about 12 cars per mile. If full occupancy occurred on every mile, it would be utopian. instead traffic congestion and hazards are expected as cars roam main arteries.

AECL Sets Accident Free Record at Pinawa Manitoba

AECL at the Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment in Pinawa Manitoba reported one million man hours without a lost time accident on August 24 1965. Employees began work there July 15 1963 with construction starting in 1961. The 1962 federal cabinet announced a contract to build the first reactor at WNRE. Continued on Page 6.

Pointe du Bois Ardythe Packer Wins Legion Scholarship

Ardythe Packer of Pointe du Bois won the Legion Scholarship at a Friday Community Hall Family Night event. The prize, by Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 70 and Ladies Auxiliary, recognizes a grade eleven resident with over 80% average.
