The Spring field Liberal Association plans a Sept 1 nominating convention at Beausejour Town Hall with credentials issued one delegate per 100 voters. Allan Sweatman of Winnipeg emerges as the only declared Liberal candidate for Springfield. others anticipated as regional chairs are appointed.
Whitemouth Anglican Church filled for the 60th anniversary with Bishop H E Hives officiating. Clergy from nearby towns attended including D Doreen Pittsburg Rev J C Martinson Stonewall and Rev R Flowers Ig nace Ontario. A pageant and hymn closed the evening with a turkey supper for parishioners and guests.
A boat on the Winnipeg River struck an unknown object sending occupants into the air. Passers by and Rev Bowen freed most survivors to shore near the Fred Gauer residence. Four year old Steven Hunchak was found trapped beneath the bow and spent Sunday night in hospital.
Dr and Mrs Wm Bilynsky were feted on Saturday August 14 at the home of Mr and Mrs G M Hay for their Silver wedding anniversary. Mrs Wm McLean and Mrs Hay received guests and a three tier cake topped the table. Out of town guests included E Pollock Stonewall Kushnir Gilbert Plains Alf Modjeski Beausejour J Goloven Winnipeg and Wm Renshaw Beausejour.
Whitemouth's Ross United Church, one of the town's oldest landmarks, will be replaced by a new 17 000 building after three years of work by the United Church Women and congregants. The original church dates to 1884 and hosted services for Presbyterians Methodists Anglicans and a Swedish mission group.
Whitemouth 4-H members attended the Beausejour rally with the Home Econo Mixers, parading in red ribbon group and competing in table setting designs. Margaret White Marilyn In gram Debbie Biebrich earned blue ribbons with $1 50 prizes and Barbara Karlicki earned a silver spoon for tables center piece while Rodney Noel and Margaret White won bake off measuring caps.
A formal induction service for The Rev. Donald R. Ross was held on Wednesday August 11 in Pinawa. Representatives from Anglican Baptist Lutheran Mennonite Presbyterian and United Churches attended. The induction was led by Rev. A F Friebert with Rt Rev H E Hives Rev J C Mack and Rev R H Vogt assisting. A reception followed. The Rosses reside at 25 McDiarmid Road Pinawa.
About 65 militiamen from the Royal Canadian Engineers camp at Snow Lake Manitoba will build two bridges over the Grass River at Wekusko Falls during a week long summer training. The 21st and 46th Field Squadrons from Flin Flon and Pine Falls form Manitoba's 6th Field Engineer Regiment.
Seven Sisters Standards captured the South Eastern League championship by defeating Air Base after finishing second in the regular schedule. Beausejour had ousted Pinawa to reach the final. Seven Sisters won three straight games, with Ed Lawrence delivering a key single and K King driving in the decisive run in extra innings to clinch the title.
Pointe du Bois 4 H club members and four leaders traveled to Beausejour on August 7 for the District Rally. They competed in judging junior demonstrations junior dress revue take off and handicraft events winning multiple prizes across units in clothing handicrafts foods and woodworking with Diane Anderson Sandra Chulka and Sandra Oakley earning blue ribbons and queen/princess honors amid a sunny well supported day.
Mrs C Precious led the Seven Sisters Falls garden contest with a high score, followed by Mesdames Sauer Rae and more. Several top entrants earned ten dollar awards while a note says the Staff House and another group did not receive prize money due to different circumstances.
Whitemouth teacher Al Shewchuk attended the annual federation seminar at Clear Lake with over 65 participants from 47 divisions. The program featured Bill 39 discussion by Arnold Minish and addresses on pensions, leadership, curriculum changes, collective bargaining, and local activities. Don Graham and Vernon Trott served as consultants.
A Lac du Bonnet arts and crafts clinic held August 18 as part of the recreation program drew only five attendees. Miss Nadya Kostyshyn, University of Manitoba fine arts student, led youth sessions enjoyed by local and Great Falls participants. The village notes multiple sports results and a forecast of no play day next year due to low growth and reader support.
