Fire destroys most of Whitemouth highway yard

A tanker from Winnipeg filling a heated asphalt storage tank toppled and spilled seven thousand gallons of asphalt at the Manitoba Highways maintenance yard in Whitemouth. Oil from the heated tank ignited, burning three storage sheds full of equipment and personal items. the fire remained confined to the yard with extensive damage expected but no confirmed cause.

Pine Falls Northeastern Golf Tourney Winners Named

The Northeastern Golf Tourney held in Pine Falls over the weekend crowned winners in multiple flights. Professional first Randy Brekke with 71 led. other top finishers included Gerry Morris sey 72 and Jerry Hollins 73, plus press radio and championship Flight winners.

Teachers Attend Courses At McMaster House August 23 27

Two local teachers from Agas siz School Division 13 will attend five day courses at McMaster House St James Assiniboia August 23 to 27. Sponsored by The Manitoba Teachers Society the courses cover student evaluation and teaching children with learning disabilities led by staff from University of Manitoba Minneapolis and Beaumont School. About 14 teachers from Manitoba are expected to attend the evaluation course and about 24 teachers for the learning disabilities course. The Society offers 12 non credit courses in July and August to improve professional knowledge and skills.

L D B Hosts Manitoba Fastball Championship

Lac du Bonnet Huskies will host the Manitoba Men's Senior B Championship on September 4 in Lac du Bonnet with seven league winners plus the host team. If the Huskies win their league they become league rep and a runner-up playoff will select the host. Other teams hail from Thompson Dauphin Brandon Portage la Prairie Winnipeg and Gimli. Pine Falls Canadians were last year’s champions.

Manitoba Announces 1971 Big Game Hunting Seasons

The Manitoba Department outlines the 1971 moose elk bear and caribou seasons. Residents may take one male moose in western, northern, and Interlake zones from late September through December, with varying end dates. Non-residents face restricted northern areas. Two elk-moose licences at Riding Mountain and Duck Mountain areas, $20, first come, Aug 23, at designated offices. Landowner arrangements advised before applying. Elk and elk-moose licences limited to Manitoba residents. Bear limits include two in extreme north and other regions, while woodland caribou limits vary by area. Snow Lake to Thompson also listed September 20 to October 30.
