Funeral services were held at Brightstone Greek Catholic church for Annie Soroka 62 of Lac du Bonnet who died August 6 in Selkirk General hospital. Burial was in Brightstone Cemetery. Survivors include six sons and seven daughters across Canada and Winnipeg.
Anne Moertelmeyer, born in Germany and raised in Beausejour, earns a top Lutheran World Federation honor. She departs for Geneva to serve two years as secretary at Federation Headquarters after leading Canadian American affiliates and Lutheran relief work in Canada and the U.S.
Two rural Manitoba students won a three week trip to United Nations headquarters in New York. Dean Neville Scarfe of the University of Manitoba announced the winners from an essay competition aligned with a U N seminary held July 13 to 17. Tanis M Cavers and Raymond Michaltzyshyn, both 17, Grade 11 students, were named winners.
Rev Francis Kula, a Cloverleaf native and son of Mr and Mrs Steve Kula, returned from the Georgian University in Rome Italy to lead the Solemn High Mass at St Marys Beausejour on Sunday August 15. He previously studied at Olivet University Illinois and traveled through France Belgium Switzerland Spain and Portugal gaining church honors. The service featured arch priest Rev A Ladislauas Sajek deacon Rev Father Chas Litowski sub deacon Rev Joseph Ferus and sermon by Very Rev Peter Jaworski M S U F.
On Tuesday August 10 P C McCuaig Winnipeg owner of a 1953 Chevrolet failed to see the Pointe du Bois tram truck at No 11 highway crossing near Lac du Bonnet. The truck crashed into the car wrecking one side and twisting the frame but the truck escaped with no damage. Ted Henley driver of the Pointe truck saw the approaching car but could not stop the heavy vehicle. No injuries were reported.

Lac du Bonnet village council, led by Mayor E M Brown, instructs the secretary to contact engineer J C Taylor to connect Memorial Centre buildings to the proposed Third Street sewer line. The council also approves signings with Selkirk Laboratory and X Ray Unit No 16 for a local Health Unit, with Mrs E M Brown to represent the village. By law 46 directs vehicle parking per posted signs. court of assessment revision set for Sept 20. Numerous village accounts approved for payment.
Dennis Crook bought the Springfield Leader on August 10 from A. W. Hanks, who previously owned both papers. Crook, longtime staffer, will push hard work as owner after moving the office to Lac du Bonnet and serving as managing editor. He aims to expand printing and local news coverage, inviting community submissions.
Rural Municipality of Lac du Bonnet held an August 2 meeting with Reeve E Wojciechowski and Councillors Mazur Drabyk and Belluk. Delegations reported army worm damage prompting prompt field inspection for Prairie Farm Assistance Act compensation. The council also addressed road petitions, intercepter drain needs, flood issues, and a graveling request. Public works expenditures were approved for multiple sub divisions and road works, with a September 20 assessment revision and tax arrears adjustments noted.
Ted Braund of the RCAF, formerly of Seven Sisters, was honored by the Canadian Red Cross at Greenwood Nova Scotia. He has donated blood over 20 times while serving as a flight engineer in the RCAF during the war and after. Eight year old Ted Zigarliski of Garson was struck while crossing Highway 1 near his home on August 12. He was taken to Beausejour Hospital for treatment. A Ontario farmer driver, back from a two week vacation in the states, was involved. Bets totaling 56 dollars were placed as Lac du Bonnet residents watched Joe Bright complete a 19 mile stretch in 140 minutes with Johnny Usack finishing in 12 minutes.
