The Public Utilities Board approved higher water charges for Hantsport and Parrsboro, with minimum bills rising to 24 dollars and top charges to 10 dollars, while Antigonish's bill jumps from 450 to 10. The move aims to fund needed system upgrades.
Industrial hygiene experts in Ottawa report a new antidote chemical for arsenical war gases with potential peacetime uses. Research from chemical warfare programs also aims to assist eye and mental diseases and victims of arsenic and mercury poisoning.
R Whiteman and C S Prodan praised four grains in Eddie Sikora's Brightstone plot: Redman Wheat Ajax Oats Montcalm Barley and Royal Flax. Redman wheat and Montcalm barley are new. Ajax oats and Royal flax perform best for local conditions. Fifteen attended the inspection. many farmers visited during the season.
Pine Falls hosts the ninth North-Eastern Manitoba Open Golf Tournament on August 17 and 18. The Pine Falls Golf Club promises excellent course conditions, with Art Land supervising and serving as the club pro. Weather uncertain but friendly, inviting spectators and players to enjoy the event.
An executive meeting of the Pine Falls Youth Training Centre outlined a Labor Day program to be held September 1 at the local grounds and swimming pool. Events include water regatta, diving and canoe races, greased pole, pie eating, carpentry, horseshoes, races for all ages, and softball with prizes.

Lac du Bonnet council approved one mile of road from Springwell to a new Lands Branch development. The project will drain farmland and provide a direct outlet for future settlers, linking Lac du Bonnet to the new agricultural area spanning Springwell to Lake Winnipeg and Stead to Winnipeg River. Draglines have worked two years and some land may be broken for settlers next summer, with hopes for further road cooperation.
John Dubhinski set an all time early threshing record in Lac du Bonnet district by threshing and delivering the first barley load to the elevator on August 6. The barley yielded well and made a good sample for the season.

Thieves broke into Quick Freeze and Locker Storage Plant in Beausejour in the early hours of Saturday August 3, entering from the side. They stole 80 in cash and over 1200 in checks, moving the safe from the front office to the rear and using a heavy hammer to break the door. The walls’ insulation kept noise down. no insurance was carried by the firm.

H Hudson’s garden won top honors, followed by Mrs J Fransen in second, Mrs M Everson third, then Mrs J Peterson, Mrs A F Bartley, and Mrs S Melnick. The Pine Falls Legion Carnival Saturday August 3 featured a bicycle parade from Sollway’s store led by the Legion band. Ann Davis won top honors in her class with orange and gold colors and a flowered model. The event progressed through town with music inspiring guests to join in as the weatherman briefly interrupted with a late shower.
Peterson and Gillies lead a guest list that includes John Peterson Verne Frantz and several dignitaries. Judges Dr. H. M. Speechly and Mr. Brown presided with C. H. Dahl W. Queen Hughes and E. V. Caton of Winnipeg among visitors. Fergusson of Great Falls and M. E. were also listed.
His Excellency George Cabana administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to Beausejour children on Sunday July 21. Names include Caroline Ancel June Baker James Baker Peter Baker Joseph Bialek Donna Bethel Evelyn Chowstkiewicz and others. The next day he visited the Cloverleaf and Stead missions confirming 8 children in Cloverleaf and 30 in Stead.
Auditors failing to return books forced postponement of the Annual Meeting to August 5. Few ratepayers attended yet the session featured heated debate on School Finance and the proposed 43 new school. Mike Steiner was re elected Trustee and George Hermities filled the remaining vacancy by acclamation.
Port Alberni reports fishermen on Vancouver Island are making excellent catches of various sharks. They harpoon the sharks with a 30 pound harpoon carved from dried yew wood, targeting shark livers for high prices.
