W W Childe urges Springfielders to vote on August 10, noting seven candidates for representative. He comments on turnout, media influence, and the rise of personal canvassing, and remarks on vandalism of campaign posters, urging enforcement.
A large crowd gathered at the legion hall on Tuesday night July 28 to bid Au Revoir to Mr and Mrs R E Hayes before their move to Toronto where his company will post him. The Stardusters provided music and refreshments as guests presented the couple with George Jensen sterling silver. Both expressed regret at leaving Pine Falls after five years of friendship and pledged to visit. They closed with songs For They Are Jolly Good Fellows and Auld Lang Syne.
The Korean war cost Canada 383 fatal casualties since late 1950 with 293 from enemy action and 90 from accidents and other causes. One soldier is missing presumed dead and 27 listed as missing. Total wounded in action reach 1,113 with 98 injured and 18 prisoners of war. Two former POWs were exchanged and repatriated earlier this year.
Rose and Art Krampe tz welcomed a 9 lb 7 oz baby boy at Whitemouth hospital, the townsite’s first newborn boy in six years. Grandad Dick Gittins arrived in Yellowknife for Giant Mines work, while David Gittins turns eleven and received a CCM bicycle from his grandfather before his trip. Harry Hudson remains a Whitemouth hospital patient as Gladys McGibbon and family visit from B.C. and elsewhere.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Kuhn on the birth of a son at Whitemouth hospital. Alvin Kwiram of Winnipeg visited at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. A. Golke, for one week. Mrs. A. Klepatz hosted a dinner for Mr. and Mrs. Albert Klepatz before they left for Sault Ste. Marie. Our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Berndt and family on the death of their husband and father on July 26.
Green Oak residents Pete and Mrs Pete Chamber honeymooned traveling through Grand Forks Fargo Minneapolis Duluth to International Falls and via Kenora. Manitoba Farmers Union Local 210 held a July 25 banquet and dance with door prizes won by Johnny Omichinski and Mr Bisko. Green Oak beat Green Bay 18 8 in a semi final Beausejour game. Kalecki took loss for Green Bay. Ladywood beat Libau 11 2. Green Oak and Ladywood set up best of three. Patsy Kozak visiting Winnipeg two weeks with S Kozak. Nettie Mikoliev visited from the States.
Birthday greetings go to Mrs. Tillie Schade and others with July and August anniversaries and birthdays. Winnipeg visitors include Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schade and daughter Carol, Lynda Makus, and Dave Petznick. Travel includes Mr. and Mrs. Carl Topnik at the Farmers Union convention in Calgary and various relatives visiting Greenwald and Steinbach.
A Manitoba six month summary shows 149 fatalities from January to June 1953 excluding traffic, compared with 140 in the same period in 1952. June 1953 alone records 29 deaths from accidents including three industrial, six home, and 20 general. Industrial accident injuries total 297 for the month. Home fatalities stem from asphyxia and suffocation, while general deaths arise from canoe overturns, drownings, animal attacks, trains, tractors, lightning, and asphyxia.
Great Falls captured the Northeastern Manitoba fastball league championship by sweeping Hungry Nine of River Hills in three straight. Tuesday night July 28 saw Carl Peterson spin a strong game as Great Falls won 6-4 to claim the Seven Sisters Community club trophy.
During last week's severe storm at Lee River the home of Jack Peterson was struck by lightning and a following high wind caused a freak accident. The window and casing blew outward and have not been found since. A nearby radio stand remained undamaged though the ground wire was nearly melted.
Social Credit candidate Paul C. Trapp spoke at the Whitemouth municipal hall on Tuesday July 28 outlining aims to open new areas for discovery and development of natural resources. Herman Beeskau chaired the meeting. Alex McLeod was the second speaker.
Mrs. D. M. Wardrop of Whitemouth created a Dancing Daffodil and a Lonely Star quilt that earned second and third prizes at a Saskatoon exhibition. The first prize went to a Saskatoon entrant.
