Kam Wah Chan Defies Odds With Lifelong Valve Surgery
Kam Wah Chan, a 14 year old girl from Winnipeg, underwent a five hour operation at Children’s Hospital to repair a defective mitral valve with a plastic and metal valve. The procedure, funded by voluntary blood donations, restored mobility and normal childhood activities she had dreamed of. Her condition resulted from rheumatic fever causing backflow and poor circulation. The Red Cross blood donor clinic will be held Tuesday April 20 at Memorial Hall Lac du Bonnet from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM to help more children like Kam.

Youth Presents Saturday Program at Selkirk Hospital
A group of 27 youths and counselors traveled to Selkirk Mental Hospital on April 10 to perform for patients. The program featured Luther Leaguers skits, Gwen and Debbie Grabke, the Sapphires, Robert Nilsson on guitar, and Luther League chorus numbers. Hospital staff treated the entertainers with coffee before their bowling outing to close the night.

Fire Destroys Trailer Home in Gordon Lake
The early Tuesday dawn fire destroyed a trailer home owned by Mr. and Mrs. Ned Radisac. Mrs. Radisac escaped with neighbors aiding. bucket brigades and limited equipment could not save the structure or its contents. Nearby, visitors from Verner Ontario joined relatives for a few days with extended family noted. Still, spring arrives with mud and rain, and the town jokes about insects to come.

Miner Killed in Rock Raise Accident at Metal Mines
A 37 year old hard rock miner Drago Regetos was killed at the Metal Mines Company site near Gordon Lake east of Lac du Bonnet after a blast caused him to fall into a 150 foot raise. He was buried under 25 to 30 tons of rock when the charge went off. Crown attorney E C Burton Jr and coroner Dr S M Burris opened an inquest and adjourned for a post mortem. The body was moved to Kenora and then to Sudbury after a prayer service in Kenora.
