Tragedy on County Road Endsin Double Suicide
John Nienaber shot his wife Mary Mentzer Nienaber on a rural road north of the city after a quarrel over their marriage. He then killed himself, with Mary wounded and fleeing to a neighbor’s, as the couple’s tale drew in neighbors and reporters. The tragedy sparked an inquest and ongoing investigation into the couple’s troubled life and the aftermath.

Opening of the Springfield G A R encampment today
The Springfield Grand Army of the Republic encampment opened at 10 15 this morning with ten to twelve camps expected to be represented. Mayor Goodwin delivered an address of welcome amid lateness, while delegates listed included Commander L W Meyers Vice Commander C B Tivhier and others. Proceedings adjourned for dinner with no business transacted and later resumed with reports on divorce cases, a lamp exhibition, and various local notices and conditions at the council chamber and city.
