Five years later Morris returns from California to win Clarice, leaving Meta to a lifedriven by wealth and a troubled marriage.
A Cassell's Magazine memory recounts the 1871 fall of the Napoleon column at Place Vendome Paris during the Paris Commune. The crowd gathered as Colonel Mayer saluted, the flag was torn, the column toppled and fragments thrown into the Seine. After the war the pieces were recovered and reassembled as the statue again stands at the summit.
