Ireland famine tale and kinder farmer's mercy
The News in Brief recounts a famine story from western Ireland about two starving sisters, Lizzie and Mary. After a harsh trek from Loughton to Kilburn they seek aid from a farmer who first refuses, then consoles himself upon witnessing the children share bread with his dog. He ultimately invites them in, learns their names, and learns their father was Martin Sullivan. The farmer, Patrick Sullivan, recognizes his kin and provides shelter and a meal, mending his earlier harshness. The tale ends with the sisters welcomed and cared for.
